Gerald Berkin, 91, was born on July 20, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York to parents who had immigrated to the U.S. from England and Russia. He was raised in Brooklyn, where he was a proud member of Boy Scout Troop 157, whose members became lifelong friends.

Gerry attended Brooklyn College where he majored in geology. He met Harriet Lichter in 1948 and they were married June 20, 1952 after he graduated. Gerald moved to Washington DC where he joined the Army Map Service. In 1953 he enlisted and served in the Army. Gerald and Harriet had two children, Jeffrey Jack and Terrie Lee.

Gerald’s subsequent work with the 902nd Military Intelligence Group took him to Tokyo, Japan where he and his family lived for four years before returning to the Washington DC area in 1964. In 1966 they moved to Geneva, Switzerland where Gerald worked as Director of Security for Investors Overseas Services, a large mutual fund company. His responsibilities for global corporate security took him throughout Europe, the Middle East and South America. The family lived in Switzerland until 1972 when they returned to the United States. Gerald re-entered government service in Security Director roles first at the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center before moving to the Naval Research Laboratory and later the Government Printing Office. He retired from the General Accounting Office as a GS-15 in 1991.

After retiring, Gerald and his wife divided their time between residences in Highland Beach, Florida and Woodbridge, Virginia. Gerald pursued writing as a hobby and published several books of short stories through Amazon Kindle. They moved to Ashby Ponds Retirement Community in Ashburn, Virginia in 2018.

Gerald was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and Life Member of Sinim Lodge, A.F. & A. M., Tokyo, Japan.

  2. I didn’t know Gerald, but I know his son Jeffrey who clearly shared Gerald’s great sense of humor. Jeffrey always spoke fondly of his childhood and the accidental adventures his parents led him to. I’m sure the kindness in his children will be an enduring reflectioin of the kindness Gerald showed. May his family and friends be comforted in the joy of having know him.
