JACK LYLE BARNES, 95

Our father Jack, passed peacefully on the evening of February 19, 2021.

Raised in upstate New York, Jack was adventurous and determined to live a full life. With many of his high school friends, he enlisted in the U.S. Army after Pearl Harbor. He was an accomplished skier, and was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division in the Italian Alps. Upon the War’s end, he attended the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), Lexington, VA and joined the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a Lt. Colonel and spent the majority of his career with SAIC as a Sr. Project Manager/Sr. System Analyst.

Of all his adventures, the most extraordinary was meeting Bertine Commiskey, “Toots.” Very much his match, his wife of 68 years was his rock and love of his life. Leading by example, they raised seven children and were instrumental in all of their grandchildren’s lives.

Jack is survived by his children, Kevin, Mark, Eileen, Karen, Adair, Claudia and David; daughters-in-law, Maria Barnes and Natalie Barnes; sons-in-law Andy Cole, Andy Clark, Todd Solomon and Bob Gangi; and grandchildren Collin and Kamry, Parker and Jack, Molly and Matt and Jimmy and Cecilia. He was also blessed with wonderful sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews. His friends were extraordinary.

He was and will always be our hero.

  2. There are no words to describe the kindness that Jack showed. He was my hero as soon as I met him, and remained my hero to the end. A true gentleman, a great husband, and the best Dad to his 7 children. He will never be forgotten and the love of his family will go on forever.

  3. Claudia, Bob and the entire Barnes family, we are thinking of you and sending our love during this difficult time.

  4. Jack enjoyed attending the Washington DC Chapter meetings of the 10th Mountain Division. He brought books for our Adopt-A-Platoon program a few years ago. He truly enjoyed a good speaker. We will miss him. Kim Hudyma
