Jack W. Barbee

Our father and grandfather, Jack Warren Barbee, crossed over into eternity on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at home in Fairfax, VA. He was 84. Jack was born October 2, 1934 in Wichita, Kansas, the only child of Clifford G. Barbee and Dorothy McCune Barbee. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Sue Barbee. He is also survived by daughters Sharon Louise Wootten and Linda Sue Mitchell; son-in-laws Sgt. Major (ret.) Michael R. Wootten and William W. Mitchell; grandchildren Lauryn Elizabeth Johnston (Greyson), Grant Michael Wootten (Michelle), Peter Warren Mitchell, Rebecca Sue Wootten, Kelly Kirkwood Mitchell and James Robert Mitchell. He was the devoted great grandfather to Everett Isaiah Johnston, Journey Louise Wootten, Walker McLeod Johnston, and Emberly Skye Wootten.

Jack grew up in Houston, Texas and was an exceedingly proud graduate of Texas A&M University, Class of ‘56. He worked for the Mobil Oil Corporation for 37 years and served in the Army Reserves achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was an avid sailor, tennis player, and traveler, sharing these interests with friends and family. He was quietly generous with his time and finances, supporting his church and many charities.

Jack’s sense of humor was as dry as the desert and, if not paying attention, you would miss the joke. His classic one liners will be missed. Jack consistently expressed his love and appreciation for his family in an understated way that was uniquely him. His devotion and concern for his wife, Sue, showed to the very end. He formed deep and lasting friendships, treasuring the many experiences they shared together. He is now free, and enjoying the fullness of eternal life in our Savior.

A visitation for friends and family will be Monday, April 8 from 3 to 5 at Money and King. Services for Jack will be held Tuesday, April 9 at 1:30 p.m. at Vienna Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, online at cbf.org, or by mail to Chesapeake Bay Foundation, ATTN: Membership Department, 6 Herndon Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403.
