Karl August Krietsch of Vienna, Virginia, passed away at home on the afternoon of August 14, 2020, surrounded by family. Mr. Krietsch was 92 years old, and was born in Magdeburg, Germany. He survived the Second World War, and spent time in a Russian POW camp. In 1947, he escaped from Soviet occupied East Germany, and made his way south, walking across the borders in the Alps from Germany into Italy. He learned Italian to go along with his native tongue, working his way south through the country.

He met and married his first wife, Beatrice Mingo, in Naples, Italy, in 1949. In 1953, he, his wife and his two oldest children emigrated to the United States, sponsored by the family of his brother-in-law, and settled in Annandale, Virginia. Mr. Krietsch spent the remainder of his life in Fairfax County, living in Springfield and Vienna. He worked for Annandale Millwork for more than 60 years, and while there he helped establish the Annandale Boys Club soccer program in 1962, the earliest youth soccer club in Northern Virginia, and was one of the first four coaches.

Mr. Krietsch’s first wife passed away in 1970, leaving him with four children. He later married Dr. Ann Lux, MD, in 1972, and had two more children. He continued his involvement in youth soccer, coaching all four of his sons over a span of thirty years. Mr. Krietsch continued to play soccer into his 50’s, carrying on a life-long love of the sport from his youth in Germany.

In addition to being fluent in three languages, Mr. Krietsch also built three houses: the family home in Vienna, a vacation home on the Outer Banks, and another at Smith Mountain Lake.

Mr. Krietsch is survived by his wife, Ann, of Vienna, and his children: Klaus and his wife Kathy, of Roanoke, VA; Clelia and her husband Jim Baur, of Kelseyville, CA; Carla, of Rocky Mount, VA; Christopher and his wife Angela, of Centreville, VA; Karl and his wife Michelle, of Newtown Square, PA; and Kevin and his wife Erin, of Chesterfield, VA. Mr. Krietsch also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a sister, Karin, of Hohenwarthe, Germany, and numerous nieces and nephews in Germany, Italy and the US.

Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, VA on Tuesday, August 25 from 11 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 12 p.m. On Wednesday, August 26 at 1 p.m. interment will occur at Resurrection Catholic Church Cemetery in Moneta, VA. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I can’t really remember a time when I didn’t know the Krietsches. Most weekends would find Mr. Krietsch and Dad working on a project of some kind or another involving bricks, woodworking, or moving large piles of dirt! And beer. There was always some beer! The Krietsches were friends of the heart. Mom used to tease Mr. Krietsch that he would say that we were friends through “sick and sin.” So many of my childhood memories involve the Krietsches, and I am sad that Mr. Krietsch is no longer in this world. I will look forward to seeing him in the next world, and I know that Bea — and Mom and Dad — are having a wonderful time with him once again. Rest in peace, and all my sympathy to the family.

  2. Our condolences to the whole family. A memory of “Uncle Karl” playing soccer with our dad, Uncle Peter and Uncle Richard in the back yard popped into my head. What a little international enclave we had back then on “Carter’s Grove” (now Campbell Rd.) Cathy & John Curtis

  3. My condolences to the whole family. I have fond memories of Karl and the family coming up for 4th of July parties at my parents house and there was always a soccer ball kicking around. What a great man he was. Peace and Love to you all. Pete Slisz

  4. Karl was our neighbor at SML, for 30+ years. He was a delightful man, kind, humble, talented, friendly, and loving family patriarch. We hope that the memory of his laughter will bring smiles to the many sad hearts that are missing him. Peace and Love to you, Karl The Milam and Hard Family

  5. Mr. Krietsch was always such a fun and funny presence for all of us hanging out with Karl during high school. We had many great times in “Krietsch basement”. We were good at causing trouble in those days, and thought we were hot stuff; but Mr. Krietsch had seen it all by then, and was thoroughly unimpressed with our shenanigans. We knew any time Mr. Krietsch came downstairs, one of his classic quotable lines was coming – he knew how to take us down a peg in the most perfect way. He was a big part of those formative years for us, and we all loved and admired him. Much love to Mrs. Krietsch, Karl, Kevin, and the rest of the family.

  6. Jim and I loved our times with Ann, Karl and our kids. Our daughter Claire( living in Naples Italy) and son Stephen (both serve in the military) Have wonderful memories.
