It is with the deepest regret and sadness that we announce the death of Lawrence “Larry” Magni, 63, of Reston, Virginia. Larry was born on June 1, 1957 in Yonkers, NY and died Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Reston Hospital from complications related to COVID-19.

Larry was a civil engineer by trade and held various corporate positions where he managed the design and construction of facilities both domestically and overseas. Larry’s law enforcement service began in 1990 when he joined the Fairfax County Police Department as a sworn Auxiliary Police Officer. Over the next decade, Larry earned the title of Lead Auxiliary Officer and amassed nearly 5,000 hours of volunteerism to the community he proudly served. In addition to serving in a patrol capacity at the West Springfield Station, Larry was a member of the Police Honor Guard and Marine Patrol Unit where he served with class and distinction. Upon his retirement from the volunteer police unit in late 1999, Larry moved to the Houston, Texas area where he worked in the building design and branding compliance field and proudly volunteered with the Montgomery County (Texas) Search and Rescue Team.

In February of 2017, Larry was hired by the Fairfax County Police Department as a merit employee and re-located back to Fairfax County. In his new role, Larry served as the Director of the Facilities and Security Division within the Resource Management Bureau and reconnected to the police family he treasured. He managed 20 facility locations which encompasses approximately 600,000 square feet of building space including the FCPD’s Public Safety Headquarters. Larry’s unique background proved critical in the design and construction of this site and several others facilities currently in the planning and design phase.

Larry’s commitment to service will leave an indelible mark on the Fairfax County Police Department and those who knew and worked with him. Larry enjoyed Caribbean cruises, walks around his Reston neighborhood and the law enforcement and search and rescue professions.

Larry will be remembered for his warm and personable nature and the depth to which he chose to engage with each person he encountered. He will be greatly missed!

We would like to thank the incredible nurses, doctors and professional support staff at Reston Hospital that did all they could and more for our beloved friend.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew & Dorothy Magni of Yonkers NY & Freehold NJ. Larry is survived by his sister Joan and her husband Don Winant of Dumont NJ, his nieces Jennifer Winant of Dumont NJ, Kimberly Winant of St. Petersburg FL, cousins Sandra & David Foti of Saluda, NC, Edward & Debbie Kmetz of Palm Coast, FL and numerous close friends to include Dannye and Jim Ivey and Ed O’Carroll.
