Lorraine Robitaille

lorraine robitaille
Lorraine Robitaille, resident of Brightview Assisted Living in Annandale, passed away on May 15, 2022. She was 87 years old. She is survived by her son, Kevin Robitaille and his wife Gabriele, of Alexandria, Virginia, and daughter, Patrice Robitaille, and her husband, John Ammer, of Vienna, Virginia, 5 grandchildren (Abagail, Brian, Claire, Nicole, and Paul) and 3 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her daughter, Maureen Rosenberg. Lorraine was born in Lewiston, Maine in April 1935 and remained in Maine for most of her life. Lewiston had attracted many French-Canadian immigrants seeking a better life, and growing up, French was Lorraine’s first language, as it was for many of the area’s residents. She attended a school run by nuns in Sabattus, Maine, and then Lewiston High School. She loved the beach and was a skilled swimmer, working as a life guard in the summer. During the winter, she dabbled in synchronized swimming at the local YWCA.

Lorraine enjoyed interacting with people, but in the 1950s, young Catholic women typically were encouraged to seek marriage in order to raise a family, so Lorraine did not pursue the nursing career that she she would have been well-suited for. She married, moved to Hampden, Maine, where she raised 3 children. She later worked at JCPenney before retiring. She was a talented knitter and seamstress and also adept in the kitchen. Holiday meals included Maine specialties such as tourtière pie, and Lorraine’s older daughter remembers being sent off to college with recipes for banana bread and Italian spaghetti (then an exotic dish). Later in life, Lorraine lived with her younger daughter, and she loved the various pets (mostly dogs) that shared the home. More recently, she enjoyed working through many jigsaw puzzles, playing card games, and annual vacations in Maine. Her family will miss her knack in later life for occasionally breaking a long silence with a keen observation or frank opinion, and of course, miss her dearly.
