MARY ELIZABETH “BETSY” MARSHALL, passed away on January 22, 2019. Beloved wife of Conrad J. Marshall, loving mother of Andy Marshall, Amy Marshall-Ruschaupt, and Chris Marshall, daughter of Richard J. Gardner and Marian Felleisen, and devoted sister of John Gardner, Barbara Schmitt, and Judy Dickson, Betsy is also survived by her grandchildren, Abby and Kirsten Ruschaupt, son-in-law Chris Ruschaupt, and daughter-in-law Tanya Kaufman.

Betsy was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Mercyhurst Prep, she began her undergraduate career at Penn State and later finished her degree at George Mason University. Betsy then went on to earn a Masters in Russian Studies from Georgetown University. Betsy and Conrad were married for well over 50 years and still held hands until the very end. They settled in McLean, Virginia and then into the home they built above the banks of the Potomac in Great Falls, Virginia. Betsy had a strong commitment to her Catholic faith and social justice. In the 60’s, she and Conrad marched with the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. in Washington D.C. She was a veteran Democratic Party activist who worked for numerous candidates for public office in Fairfax County and Virginia state politics. Betsy worked with former First Lady Rosalynn Carter to help put on a Friendship Force exchange program as part of a cultural diplomacy effort with the Soviet Union. She later worked for many years as a substitute teacher in several Fairfax County high schools. Betsy was also an experienced horseback rider and one Christmas gave her children a Shetland pony named “Spaghetti” in what was by all accounts the greatest Christmas ever.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend viewings on Wednesday, January 30 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Money and King funeral home at 171 W. 1. I’m sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one. When someone we love dies, it’s natural to want to see that person again. God promises us that He will comfort us in our trials if we go to him in prayer. 2 Corinthians 1:3 calls him the God of all comfort. I’d like to share with y’all this link that shows 12 steps on coping with grief that is good for sharing. I have personally found this very comforting and I hope y’all do as well. https://www.jw.org/finder?wtlocale=E&docid=102018086&srcid=share

  2. I want to offer my condolences to Mary’s family. Pray to God for comfort. He will help
    because God cares for you.
    1Peter 5:7

  3. Dear Marshall family, Ken and I send our condolences. We old-time ‘McLean’ families have been better because of Conrad and Betsy – and the family. Sympathy to you all.
