Mervin L Norton

mervin norton
Mervin Norton, 94, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021, at Bellaire at Stone Port Assisted Living in Harrisonburg, VA, having lived formerly in Springfield, VA and Vienna, VA (and, as a military man, in several places around the world). He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Martha. He is survived by his sons David Norton (Bonnie Norton), of Hague, VA and Michael Norton (Janis Norton), of Harrisonburg, VA; his grandchildren, Jennifer Wolfenbarger (Andy Wolfenbarger) of Fredericksburg, VA; Steve Norton (Kim Norton), of Ashland, VA; Matthew Norton (Michelle Norton) of Lynchburg, VA; and Hannah Lampron (Alexandre Lampron), of Atlanta, GA and 6 great-grandchildren.

Mervin was born May 3, 1927, in Birmingham, AL, the son of Henry Buford Norton and Bertha Mae Bendall Norton. He attended the school where his father served as principal and was a well-known maker of mischief (at least as he told the tales). Having skipped a grade in school, he joined the Army shortly after his seventeenth birthday. It was during this two-year period that he learned how to build radios from scratch, and this formed the foundation for what would become his life-long vocation. Upon graduating from Auburn University in 1950, he rejoined the Army, where he served as a communications engineer with the Army Signal Corps until his retirement in 1968. His working life post-retirement was dedicated to the US military, first with Page Communications and then with his own company, VCA Corporation. He continued working in retirement writing computer programs, first commercially, and later to assist his several churches.

The center of his life was his wife, Martha. The two met at Auburn during Mervin’s final year of college and were inseparable until Martha’s death in 2006. He never tired of telling the tale of their sweet courtship. Both were active in church activities, joining the Church of the Good Shepherd in 1987 and Oakton UMC in 2001. Mervin would say in his later years that he attended 3 services each week, the first service at Oakton, the second service at Good Shepherd, and communion at Bob Evan’s in-between.

Mervin was a lover of God, a truly generous soul, and a teller of colorful tales, most of them true. He will be missed by all.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 18, from 6:00pm - 8:00 pm at Money and King Funeral Home; 171 Maple Ave W; Vienna, VA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 19, 10:00am at The Church of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church; 2351 Hunter Mill Rd; Vienna, VA. Burial with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

  1. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this most difficult time. Sending our deepest condolences, The Kindred Hospice Team

  2. It is with great sadness that I feel in learning of Mervin’s passing. We shared many events during his time with Page and after he formed his own company. We kept in touch from time to time over the past years and I will truly miss our conversations. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and want them to know that we have put the sad news out to many members of our ‘Friends of Page’ reunion group. His name will also be placed on our HONOR ROLL as well. Respectfully Jack Greve
