Patricia (Ann) Haase Ables

September 09, 1935 - October 26, 2019

On Saturday, October 26th, 2019, Patricia Haase Ables, of Vienna, VA, passed away at age 84 after an almost 5-year battle with breast cancer. Her husband, children and grandchildren were by her side. She was the beloved wife of Denis Ables and a much adored mother of five children and grandmother of six grandchildren.

Patricia was born on September 9, 1935 in New Orleans, LA, to Macey Chatelain and Edward Haase. She lived in New Orleans until her marriage in December 1956, then moved briefly to Corpus Christi, TX before returning to New Orleans for another three years. Following that, she spent three years in Deep River, CT before moving to Virginia in 1963. She first lived in Falls Church, VA for 8 years, then finally settled in Vienna, VA, where she has resided for the past 48 years.

Her legacy is her kind, gentle, giving and caring spirit. She found the good in everyone and made anyone she met feel accepted and appreciated. Patricia especially devoted herself as a mother and grandmother—always available, generous, caring and fun. She was a tiny person but was a uniting rock of her large, rambunctious clan. Many a family trip was orchestrated by Patricia too… whether it was to she and Denis’ Northern Neck home, Wrightsville Beach, the Outer Banks, Wintergreen, Deep Creek, the Homestead, or a cruise, all sorts of wonderful family getaways were instigated by her. She enjoyed trips to the mountains, the beach and everywhere in between, as well as reading, recipe collecting, gardening, dancing, wine sipping, shopping….and much more since almost everything interested her.

While her family was foremost in her life, she worked for short stints outside the home, most notably at The Langley School in McLean, VA as well as a local insurance agency and realty firm in Vienna, VA.

Patricia is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Denis, four very grateful children (spouses), Denise Ables Belyavsky (Mikhail) of Reston, VA, Julie Ables Chapin of Vienna, VA, Edward Haase Ables (Linda) of Nokesville, VA, Geoffrey Ables (June) of Huntersville, NC; six adoring grandchildren, Rachel Belyavsky (Jon Blaine) of Arlington, VA, Zoe Patricia Belyavsky of Alexandria, VA, Mallorie Terranova (PJ) of VA Beach, VA, Lauren Tramaglini (Jared) of Wilmington, NC, Will Shanahan of Nokesville, VA and Elizabeth Chapin of Vienna, VA and her first great grandchild-to-be, baby boy Tramaglini, due in March; her sister and confidant Carolyn Haase, and her dear nephew Steven Ovenden (Dee), not to mention the many dogs and cats, both her own and her family’s, who she enjoyed and accommodated over many years no matter the havoc. She is predeceased by her precious daughter Erin Patricia Ables and her niece Sharon Patricia Ovenden. She will be deeply missed by all.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, November 4th at 1pm at Vienna Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends afterwards at a reception in the church’s Great Hall.

While Patricia loved to support many charities and causes, she had a particularly soft spot in her heart for the plight of Native Americans…so, in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent to Partnership with Native Americans (gotluck.link/PatriciaAbles).

  1. I can still hear Aunt Pat’s laugh and her very kind voice and the great way she had of listening and seeing your point. She was good at recognizing irony or absurdity and having a good laugh over it. Pat was the center of a very warm extended family and I was lucky to join in on some of their adventures.
