Robert Paul Reid, a retired civil engineer, died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and pneumonia on April 6, 2019.

Mr. Reid was born in the village of Barker, Niagara County, New York on October 8, 1923 to Joseph Leo Reid and Katherine Sinnie LaPort Reid. He graduated from Barker Central School and earned a B.S. and an M.S in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

After the war, Mr. Reid supervised the construction of roads and sewer systems in Park Forest, Illinois, one of the early post-war planned communities. He was employed by Great Lakes Division, U.S. Army Corps of Civil Engineers in Chicago, where he participated in the design of flood protection structures in the upper Mississippi River Basin. He then worked in the Atlantic District, Corps of Engineers in New York, supervising the design of Air Force facilities located in Newfoundland, Labrador, the Canadian Arctic Islands, and Greenland.

From 1954 to 1957, Mr. Reid was a member of the Joint U.S. Military Group in Spain, employed by the U.S. Air Force as engineer/manager for the design and construction of radar communications stations. In 1957, he was employed by Air Force Headquarters were he was associated with the design of numerous Air Force facilities world-wide. In 1978, he transferred to the Air Force Systems Command headquarters where he was Deputy Director for Engineering and Construction until his retirement in 1988.

Mr. Reid lived in McLean, Virginia for 60 years. He was a founding member of St. Luke Catholic Church in McLean and was a lector there for many years. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels of Fairfax County for over 20 years. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of the Notre Dame Club of Washington, D.C. and the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Reid was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Margaret Mary Boland Reid, who died January 19, 2007. He is survived by their children, Catherine (Mark) Drake of California, Maryland; Joseph Boland Reid of Arlington, Virginia; and Patricia Reid (Matthew) Huggins of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by grandchildren Erin Coonradt (Greg) Conden, Rose Virginia Reid Huggins, and James Robert Reid Huggins and great-granddaughters Olivia Reid Conden and Honora Duffy Conden.
