Thomas Andrew Ryan (87) Retired CIA Officer
Thomas (Tom) Andrew Ryan passed away peacefully at home on December 31, 2018 at the age of 87. He was a beloved father, a loving husband, and a devoted patriot.
Mr. Ryan was born in New York City on May 11, 1931 to Martin Daniel Ryan and Anna Seavers Ryan. He grew up in the Bronx with his older brother Marty and older sister Joan. After graduating from St. Bonaventure University in 1952, he served as an infantry officer in the Army for three years. Mr. Ryan continued to serve his country for another 35 years as a CIA operations officer, including overseas tours in Japan, Thailand, Brazil, Poland and Australia. After retiring in 1991, he worked for 10 more years as a CIA contractor. Mr. Ryan was also a dedicated weekly volunteer at Fairfax Hospital for more than 10 years.
On July 28, 1956, Mr. Ryan married Lucille Mary Altieri, who grew up in the same neighborhood in the Bronx and who also attended St. Brendan’s Catholic Church. Together they had many adventures around the world and raised five children: Teri (Doug) Vickery, Tim (Dawn, dec.) Ryan, Mike (Kathleen) Ryan, Sheila (Mike) Carney, and Maureen (Chris) Berry. Mr. Ryan was a beloved grandfather to eight grandchildren: Sam Shuptrine, Jessie Ryan, Kevin Carney, Taylor Ryan, Aidan Carney, Nolan Carney, Aysha Berry, and Reyna Berry. He was also a great-grandfather to Desmond Shuptrine.
Family and friends are invited to Tom's Life Celebration at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 West Maple Avenue, Vienna on Sunday, January 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 14 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Ryan’s name to the National Parkinson Foundation at www.parkinson.org would be welcome.

My most sincere sympathies to the entire Ryan family. It was my pleasure to work with Tom and through that, to meet many family members. Tom shared many of the stories of his life and his family with me as we worked out. His stories painted a picture of a life fully lived and thoroughly enjoyed. Throughout all of our conversations two overriding themes prevailed: dedication to the United States and love of his family. It was a pleasure to know Tom and to get to know members of his family. He will be sorely missed.
