Obituary for Arnold T.Y. Chow

Arnold, age 65, peacefully passed away at home in Oak Hill, VA, on Thursday, May 17, 2018. He was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in December 2014 and fought bravely until the end.
Born on June 14, 1952 in Queens, NY, he lived in Uniondale, NY as a child with his loving Mom, Rose Jong, Dad, Jack Chow and sister, Stephanie. It was a family gathering place that started each summer with his birthday party and continued to each Jong and Chow household through the years. He attended The Gunnery in Washington, CT for high school where he found his love for literature, writing and crew. He was alumnus of University of Rochester where he met his wife, Doris. He continued his education to complete his MBA at Boston University, where he started running races being inspired by Bill Rodgers and the Boston Marathon. He later completed NYC Marathon with his dear friend, Dean.
Arnold and Doris married on April 4, 1981. They had three wonderful children, Matthew, Jessica and Kevin. His family life was full as he was deeply embedded in full activities and connections of the Chin clan. He started working in NY at FCIA. Upon moving to Virginia to work at Export-Import Bank, he became involved in his children’s sports teams as soccer and basketball coach at various times. His professional life was filled with generous people, who he befriended through their kindness. His quick wit and straightforward style made an impact. You could rely on him. He was blessed to witness his children become young adults, their college graduations, weddings of Matt and Jessica, and Jess and John. He was proud of who and what they became.

Arnold leaves a legacy of love of family and special teaching moments from hooking worms on fishhooks or one-handed basketball shots. He was a quiet, tower of strength who touched us fully.

We’ve established a Tribute Fund in honor of Arnold to assist those in their continuing fight and work in colon/rectal cancer.
