barbara cassatt
Barbara Chung-yong Cassatt of Annandale, Virginia, died peacefully on September 20, 2017. She was born and raised in Korea. In 1963 she emigrated to the United States to study Chemistry, first at St. Johns University and then Georgetown University where she received her Master’s degree and met her husband, Jim. After graduation she worked her way through the ranks to become Managing Editor of the journal, Analytical Chemistry. After a short stint as a patent examiner, she took a position at the National Library of Medicine, a position from which she retired in 2001.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jim, son Chris, sister Gyu Bok, brother Joo Whan (the latter two living in Korea) and four beautiful grandchildren, Ben, Max, Nathan and Abby, the latter on whom she especially doted. She is also survived by her loving surrogate family at Arden Courts, Annandale, a memory care facility.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Holy Cross, 2455 Gallows Road, Dunn Loring, VA, on October 14 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Barbara’s name to charities involved in the relief efforts associated with the recent hurricanes.

  3. I am so sorry to hear of your loss Jim. Your wife was such a beautiful person inside and out. The first time I met her with Pam and she showed us around your beautiful home was majestic. Your love for each other was magic and it is an honor to have been about to know you. During her time at Arden Courts she was a helper, a light spirit, and a pure joy to be around. She cherished pictures of you both and her family, and that is something that in this world we live in trumps anything we do. Love is pure and she glowed in the light of it each and every day. My sincere condolences and if you need anything please do not hesitate to reach out to me anytime.
