Charles passed peacefully after a long illness on August 9th, 2018. His loving wife of 54 years, Elena, and his sisters Beatrice and Paya predeceased him. Born in Maria Susana, Argentina, to Dr. Juan Carlos Guevara and Lucy Scott, he studied architecture, but found work as an interpreter with the U.S.I.A. He made his way to Washington D.C., becoming an interpreter for the State Department. He finished his civil servant career as a broadcaster for The Voice of America. Charles loved soccer, and was a founding member of the Little River Soccer Club in Annandale. As a coach for the club, he excelled at spotting talent for his select teams, many of whom went on to receive college scholarships as a result of their combined coaching and playing talents. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a principled, dignified, but tough, talented man, with a beautiful speaking and singing voice and boundless love of animals in general, but dogs most of all. His daughter and son-in-law Giselle and Domenic Mingione, son and daughter-in-law Charles and Liz, youngest daughter Lorraine and son-in-law Ken Levine survive him, along with his six grandchildren whom he adored. A memorial service will be held August 30th at 1pm at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 West Maple Avenue, Vienna, Virginia. All who knew him are welcome to attend. Dear Guevara family – I learned recently that your beloved father passed away. My father Enrique Oyhenart was a colleague of Charles at the VOA and shared his love of fútbol and food from our native Río de la Plata región of South America. My father always spoke proudly of the highly skilled Little River Soccer Club teams they coached together. I wish you peace in this time of sadness and nothing but warm memories of you dad. I spent a good portion of my formative years in the Guevara household. As Lorraine’s friend, it was like my second home. I always felt loved and welcomed by both of her parents. I am saddened by the news of Mr. Guevara ‘s passing and wish to extend my deepest condolences to the entire family. May the happy memories serve as a comfort during this difficult time. ❤️
