Conrad J Marshall

conrad marshall
CONRAD JOSEPH MARSHALL, who practiced law in McLean, Virginia for over 50 years, passed away at his home in Great Falls on December 6, 2017. Beloved husband of Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Marshall, loving father of Andy Marshall, Amy Marshall-Ruschaupt, and Chris Marshall, son of Casimir Mszanowski and Helen Ladowski-Mszanowski, and devoted brother of Casey Marshall, Barbara Reszkowski, and Dolores Ward, Conrad is also survived by his grandchildren, Abby and Kirsten Ruschaupt, son-in-law Chris Ruschaupt, and daughter-in-law Tanya Kaufman.

Conrad was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania where he was proud to have saved lives as a lifeguard on the Peninsula at Presque Isle. After graduating from Erie’s Cathedral Prep, he earned an undergraduate degree at Gannon University (where he was a member of the TKE fraternity), a master’s degree in journalism at Penn State, and a J.D. at Catholic University. Conrad, one of the very first attorneys in McLean, was devoted to his community, and was extremely active in local, state, and national politics. In the 60’s, Conrad marched with the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. in Washington D.C. and worked for John and Bobby Kennedy. Conrad was a fixture in Fairfax County and Virginia Democratic politics in the 70’s and 80’s, including a term as Chairman of the Fairfax County Democratic party. Conrad worked tirelessly in the establishment of the McLean Community Center and played a central role on the campaigns of former Fairfax County Supervisor Rufus Phillips for Supervisor, Congress, and U.S. Senate, as well as Chuck Robb for Governor and Senator, Jimmy Carter for President, and many more. He ran for the Virginia House of Delegates in 1980. Conrad was a committed environmentalist and could often be found fishing for smallmouth bass on the Potomac River, where he built a home with his wife of over half a century, Betsy, whom he absolutely adored.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend viewings on Friday, December 15 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Money and King funeral home at 171 W. Maple Ave. Vienna, VA, as well as a funeral mass on Saturday, December 16 at 11am at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, Virginia followed by a reception from 12-3 also at St. Luke. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Conrad’s favorite charity, St. Joseph’s Lakota Indian School at 1301 North Main Street, Chamberlain, SD 57325 (800-341-2235, saintjosephs@stjo.org). Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I will always remember Uncle Connie at the piano during family gatherings, fishing the Potomac, loving his dogs, allowing Sue and I to come visit VA in the summer, watching Aunt Betsy cook (and snacking the whole time with her),and being proud of his Polish heritage. He was always there with a smile when Amy, Andy, Missy, Sue and I were having fun and getting into mischief. My nickname was Crany Ala Poo in the house and I still want to know how that name came about!!! I could go on and on about our adventures in the woods with their Tennesee Walker , the stinging nettles, the snake under the porch, and the ticks we that bore under our skin while we amused ourselves but I will not.

Just know that I have many fond memories of Uncle Connie and will cherish them forever. Rest in peace now and forever Uncle Connie.

    Love,
    Mary Ann Ignaczak and family
Uncle Connie’s niece from St Louis

  2. I recently read about the loss of your dear loved one. Although we are not acquainted personally, please accept my condolences. Losing a dear loved one can leave a very empty space in one’s life. Please find strength, hope, and comfort in the God of Comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4).

  3. O ALL MIGHTY GOD GIVE BEAUTIFUL PLACE IN HAVEN TO OUR BELOVED CONRAD J. MARSHALL AND COURAGE TO BRAVED FAMILY TO BEAR THIS UN BEARABLE LOSS. MARSHAL HAD GIVEN THE EXCELLENT SERVICE TO OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT.
    REGARDS
    MINISTER AMAR NATH GUPTA

  4. Dear Betsy and family,
We are saddened seeing Connie’s obituary in the newspaper. Know that our memories include the times we enjoyed at your home. Your hospitality and conversations are now more special to us. Pete recalls the times he and Connie fished during their younger years and the trips camping in Cooks Forest. The camping trip included 7 guys in a ’39 Chevy, little money, 4 flat tires and the search with friendly gals who had food. We also remember the concert we all went to in D.C. when we sat on blankets on the ground and enjoyed the delightful music and evening air. Thanks for the memories. You will be remembered in our thoughts and prayers.
    Pete and Carol Repoff

  5. Dear Betsy, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We loved having Conrad as our ‘office neighbor’. He was such a fine attorney and a genuinely kind man. My late husband, Skip, enjoyed talking cars , fishing and politics with him. We all missed him when he retired. I hope you are well and that you will find comfort with your family. I have sent a donation to the St.Joseph’s School in his honor. Regards, Toni Burger

  6. Betsy, I just learned of Conrad’s passing. I was stunned. He was a good friend and I always enjoyed seeing him each day at the office. If there is anything I can do for you, please call me at any time. My sincere sympathies to you and your family. Conrad will be missed.
