Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Thank you for being the most amazing Mom I could ever have asked for. You and Dad have taught me how to treat others and what it truly means to be family. I miss you so much Mom, and I love for always.

    Love,
    Freddie

  2. Thank you Susanne for being my everything for 43 years. You have been my dear wife, my best friend, the worlds best mom and my life partner until now and will be forever. Your wisdom and endless love is already missed. Where do I find answers to all my questions about life, cooking, gardening, health and everything else in life. You used to provide the answers.
I will always think about our memories and experiences all around the globe.
Rest in piece until we see each other again.
    I will always love you.
    Christer

  3. Fun times at Westwood; from your Women’s Golf matches with the 18 holers, to evening rounds where we walked 18, to birthdays and other celebrations. I know Westwood was a special place in yours and all our hearts.
    Love,
    Freddie

  4. You were always smiling and laughing, no matter the season or weather. Who says we don’t get snow in Virginia! And all the recent memories on Navitas with friends and family.

  5. You quickly proved that you are an amazing grandmother to Christian’s two wonderful sons. We all love you so much.

  6. As a neighbor and a person, Susanne was the best.  We loved sharing the Swedish holiday,  Midsummer , as well as Christmas, with her and Christer.  We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and hike on Skyline Drive.  Susanne was, as always, particularly kind and walked slowly with me as I hobbled along.  We loved that she shared with us her joy of the Navitas.  Most of all, we loved knowing her as our neighbor, her love for her family and home.  What a wonderful lady; we will miss her.

  7. Mom. Ever since I can remember you & me have been cooking, comparing receipes, sharing pictures of food. It all started with my very first memories of going to the weekend farmers markets in Belgium in the late 80s. Trying all the free samples of olives, fruits, bread and anything else that the farmers were offering up. This passion has continued my whole life to the day in Stockholm around 10 years old and I made my very own first Bearnaise sauce. Many found memories of grilling at Fridhem or Vienna by the pool. I am attaching a few of my mom’s and my own personal communications of dishes we made when the other person wasn’t around. Dear beloved Mom! My passion for food & cooking will always remind me of you!! & Bring a big grin to my face. Thank you! Love you always /Hans

  8. Mom, I see your passion to help others and your love of nature in Eric and Zach. Eric will always walk up to a bug, bend down and look real close. He is always so interested and I remember when we used t take walks, you would stop and explain nature to him. Anytime we see a butterfly, a bird chirping or just walking around in the woods, we will be reminded of your gentle smile and love of life. You will be missed immensely but thank you for all the wonderful memories! Love you always, Christian, Becca, Eric and Zach.

  9. Susanne was so sweet to me when we joined Westwood 10 years ago. She welcomed me to the 18 Holers group and she was also excited for me when I left Tuesday golf days to go back to work full time. So sorry I won’t get to golf with her again. My deepest condolences to her family. Thanks for sharing these wonderful pictures. Sincerely, Julie Groff

  11. Dear Susanne, I miss you. I can still see you in my mind’s eye, my wonderful yoga student. You always moved well, pushing yourself with good sense to experience our class to the best of your ability. As you move forward, you will take many wonderful memories and much love with you from your family and many friends.

  12. It is with very heavy hearts we say goodbye to lovely Susanne.

You welcomed us into your family with wide open arms. Together we celebrated Becca and Christians’ courtship, wedding and parenthood. We remember with great affection all of times spent with you and Christer. Thank you for teaching us about Swedish traditions and especially hosting us for Christmas Eve celebrations. You were an amazing hostess and chef. Christmas season was more joyous when shared with you and your family.

Our most precious shared memories are those spent with your grandchildren Eric and Zach. Waiting for what seem like forever for Eric’s birth. Holding Eric for the first time, your love and support was unparalleled. That love continued throughout Eric’s life. You were the best grandmother or Farmor, playing endlessly with Eric, teaching him Swedish songs and how to cook Swedish treats. You were always loving, patient and encouraging of Eric. How many Lego buildings, how many nature walks, how many read books and cuddles and kisses? Enough that Eric will always remember his loving Farmor, but sadly not enough.

We were devastated when you were diagnosed with cancer but so happy when you responded to treatment and able to enjoy the birth of your second grandson Zach. You embraced Zach with the same love as Eric and taught Eric how to be a good big brother.

It is impossible to count the number of people, including us, who have been touched by your love, warmth, lively spirit and generosity. Your most enduring and important legacy are your lovely sons Hans, Christian and Freddie. You raised three of the best young men we know. Young men who are devoted to you. We know their hearts are broken but Hans, Christian and Freddie will continue to carry your love and spirit their entire lives.

Yesterday Eric told us Farmor died and he was very sad. But Eric said, “Farmor is now a star in the sky—the brightest star’. Yes, we replied, we are all very, very sad. And yes, Farmor is the brightest star in the sky as she was the brightest star on earth.

So we will look for the brightest star each night and send love to Susanne.

    Much love,
    Joan & David

  13. What a remarkable woman and friend! From the early days in Waterloo, to Sweden, and to Vienna, our families were united in fun and fellowship. We welcomed the birth of our sons in Belgium and enjoyed New Year on Sanibel. We walked the National Mall and marveled that our children could tour the Smithsonian in less than an hour. In more than thirty years you never missed a birthday wish with a call, card, or email. My family and I are honored to have known you and to have shared so many treasured memories. You are missed by our family.

  14. Dear Bergman family, I so enjoyed my friendship with Suzanne while we warmed the cold aluminum benches at the always exciting Madison/Marshall ice hockey games as we cheered our team on to win for 6-7 years. And witnessed those exciting first dates for high school proms!! Suzanne was always the organizer/hostess of those great times and led to many wonderful memories for her family! And her many friends! My condolences and prayers are with each of you. Lovingly, Nancy and Richard Smith

  15. Susanne

    Vila i frid Susanne!

    Kram

  16. My fondest memory of Susanne is a warm and wonderful extended conversation we had while walking various golf courses — occasionally looking out to see how our sons’ game was going. I was especially delighted to be invited to a Midsummer Night’s Festival at Susanne’s home and feeling all the love and joy that she cultivated among family and friends. Farewell Susanne. Till we meet again, Love suki

  17. Susanne was one of the most resillient and sweet people I have ever met. I would certainly have spent some time feeling sorry for myself, but she always pushed through her trials with a smile. During her last hospitalization, I came to visit her on a Sunday night. Rather than telling me her symptoms and problems, she was preoccupied with discussing why I should be away from my family. I tried to explain that the kids were asleep and it was fine but she would have none of it. Everyone in our office loved her and would follow her clinical trial progress through me during the time she was at NCI. Interestingly, I was with her NCI clinical trial doctor, Dr. Greten, when I received the text that she passed. He sends his best to this amazing family. With love, Dr. C

  19. We became friends when you first came here to look for a place to live in Vienna. What a gift it was to have a fellow Swedish midwife settle near by! Over the years we have enjoyed discussing health care and women’s health issues in our two countries. The kids loved to come to your house and play with lego and taste your cinnamon buns. Sara loved to have a Swedish “auntie” here, who liked to come to her dance recitals too! You navigated all the issues with children in schools in a new country so well. For all the good times during the years, we thank you! For the Midsummer gatherings with great food and fellowship and singing. For family celebrations and dinners of various kinds, we are thankful to have been a part. We all appreciated this local slice of Sweden with the greatest of friends!
    Sov gott.
With much love to the whole family here and in Sweden

  20. I remember Susanne as such a sweet, welcoming and caring person. She loved her family, friends and life. Frank and I were so fortunate to have met the Bergman family and even had the opportunity to meet Susanne’s parents. Frank loved that he was able to take them fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. Christer, Christian, Hans and Freddie – my condolences to all of you and your families. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  21. I have had the privilege of knowing Mr. and Mrs. Bergman for 6 years. Their love for each other, their family, and their community has been truly remarkable to witness. I have been inspired and amazed by Mrs. Bergman’s bravery, grace, and strength in the face of her illness. I offer my deepest condolences to the entire Bergman family.

  22. My mother and I have known the Bergmans since they moved to their home in Vienna some 20 years ago. In addition to being an involved mother and loving husband, Susanne was a talented gardner, potter, cook and loved the natural world, including the chipmunks and birds she attracted to their garden. She even delivered frogs that mistakenly jumped in their pool to my mother who has two ponds. She was a wonderful and caring neighbor to my mother and we sometimes chatted over the fence when our poodle would alert me of her presence . I will miss her charm and grace, even in the face of adversity. Our thoughts and prayers are with with you. With love, Rosemarie, Ilona, Moritz and Paco.

  23. I have so many wonderful memories of my lovely friend. Having met the Bergman’s through my Mom and Emil, we found that we had so much in common with our families and similar interests. Over the last 20 years or so, we have had so many fun adventures and I realized how important our friendship was and appreciated all of the time we would chat or spend together. From the Keys to the Shenandoah, to Joe’s Stone Crab and the Potomac, we always found time to enjoy each other. Just a little more than a week or so before she passed away, we spend an hour on the phone talking and laughing and catching up… she sounded so good and I treasure that. It’s funny, when I think of her telling me something, I hear it in her voice. Some of my favorite memories are that summer she taught Victoria how to flower the Maypole and the giggles and laughs we had singing drinking songs around the dinner table. Her wonderful hospitality and food… even when she came to our place! She insisted on making her wonderful Swedish pancakes for breakfast or making me feel oh so special on my birthday. Ahh… how I loved my friend. I will miss the joy she brought to my life and our time together. She was like a sister to me in so many ways… until I see you again my friend.
