Gene Paul Hammel
February 15, 1935 ~ September 10, 2009
Gene P. Hammel passed away on September 10, 2009 at the age of 74 at his home from kidney & heart failure under the kind care of Hospice. Beloved husband of the late Jane Ann Hammel; father of Kasha Winston & Karla Eaton; grandfather of Max & Hannah Eaton & Lewis Eugene Winston, IV; & brother of Lloyd Hammel. Gene was born in Lafayette, Indiana & was a graduate of Purdue University & Syracuse University. Gene lived in Vienna for 35 years & worked as an executive sonar engineer, orginially for General Electric in Syracuse, New York, & then for IBM & Lockheed Martin in Virginia & then as a co-founder of Assett Corporation in Manassas, Virginia.

My condolences to Gene’s family and friends. I worked with Gene from the early 80’s into the 90’s when I retired and he was a good engineer and colleague. I was saddened by the news of his passing and send out some prayers for him. Chuck
Gene was a great engineer. He mentored me back in the early 90’s and I’ll always appreciate his help and friendship during those very challenging years. He was never afraid of any challenge, no matter how difficult. He’ll be missed.
My condolences to his family. He was a wonderful co-worker and I enjoyed supporting him as an Admin. Asst. He was a humorous person and made coming to work fun. I’m surey he will be greatly missed! May God Bless his family as they deal with his loss.

Gene was one of the “good guys”. He always wanted to do what was right for the fleet and his customer. Bless him. Jeff Guhl

He was a great systems engineer who made the world a better place. He made us all laugh when we needed to laugh. He lead his teams to success with his never ending desire to win! We will miss Gene! Gene was both my colleague and my employee when we both worked at the IBM FSD Headquarters. He was a superior engineer and a very good business strategist that made him a formidable presence. In the position that he held, he was able to maintain his loyalties while exercising objectivity in the assessment of a business area from which he was separated. We have such fond memories of Gene, with his beloved Max and Hannah, at the pool, and around town. He always kept us in stitches and was full of life and love. We never saw him without a big grin and a warm hello. May your fond memories comfort you now. God Bless.
At Lockheed Martin I provided Contracts support to Gene as a Program Manager. Enjoyed his wit, humor, outgoing direct manner and that he was a caring individual. May his family be comforted knowing he was highly regarded by so many. The peace of the Lord be with you.
Gene was a mentor to many of us at IBM and Lockheed Martin. He easily shared his knowledge and experience for the benefit of everyone. He instilled in us the importance of always placing the customer first and excelling in all we did. His sense of humor, compassion for others, and “tell it like it is” approach was always refreshing. Gene is one of those souls that cross your path and forever change you. Look in on us from time to time and I will always try to make you proud. Rest in peace Gene, I will miss your company. I worked with Gene at IBM-LORAL-Lockheed and then at ASSETT. He was a joy to work with and will be sorely missed as a good friend.
Girls, I was asking for your Dad at the American Legion Post in Vienna where my wife Toni and I used to visit with him at lunch. Your Dad, Ted Goodenow and I were buddies for many years; I was a haircut customer of your Mom’s quite a while back. Please accept my condolences.
