On Sunday, May 15, 2011 at his home in Gainesville, VA, from complications related to ALS.
He is survived by his second wife, Norma Shea Smith; daughters Holly Smith, Valerie Kirkman and Nancy Erickson; six grandchildren and one great-granddaugher. Born in Reno, Nevada, in 1923, he was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1945. He was a missile expert and worked on nuclear weapons safety. He later worked for the CIA and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. He was a founding member of the Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission.
