Sue Elizabeth Hawkins Lahr

July 18, 1928 ~ September 7, 2016
Sue Elizabeth Hawkins Lahr, 88, a long-time resident of Vienna, died September 7, peacefully in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank John Lahr, Sr. Sue is survived by her children, Steve Lahr, Atlanta, GA; Frank Lahr, Jr., Anchorage, AK; and Liz Lahr (Reid Litwack), Indianapolis, IN; and her grandchildren Lucy, Ben and Abe Lahr.
Sue was born July 18, 1928, in Los Angeles, CA. She spent a tomboyish girlhood in West Los Angeles. Cherished memories included family vacations in the High Sierra's with her father at the wheel of the old Studebaker with Mom, her brother, Jack, and Rollo (the family German Shepherd)hitched to the car would be her father's self-made box trailer full of their camping needs; and her trips by Greyhound bus with her mother for summer weeks in Salt Lake Cityon the way the bus would usually pull into Las Vegas, Nevada, for a short stop at nightall lights were ablaze even then, but she remembered only a few blocks of "civilized" territory, not the acres and acres of today's Las Vegas. She loved horseback riding and was in horse heaven when her Dad and brother bought Iron Horse Stables, making unlimited opportunities for riding, usually up in the Baldwin hills behind their house, and along the hill overlooking Hughes Aircraft plant down to Playa del Rey, which borders the Pacific Ocean.
She attended Overland Avenue Elementary School, Emerson Junior High School, and Hamilton High School. During Sue's years studying at UCLA, the US Navy again opened it's ranks to women (closed after World War II), and in September 1948 she dropped out of school and joined the first company formed by the Navy for regular, rather than the World War II reserve-status, WAVES. After having attended Radioman's school in Norfolk, Va, she was assigned to a tour in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Sue and Frank were married in July, 1959 and spent their early years together in Iran and Japan before settling in Vienna. Together they enjoyed a unique sense of humor, world travels and their home in Vienna.During the 1980s, while working for the Agency for International Development, Sue earned an Associate of Science degree from Northern Virginia Community College. She then worked as a roving secretary in the office of Finance for the Central Intelligence Agency until her retirement in 2009.
Sue enjoyed tracing her family's genealogy as well as reunions with extended family in Utah. A lifelong learner, she was fascinated by psychology, languages and culture. She treasured her home and watching birds in the backyard. She appreciated her neighbors, walks through the neighborhood and neighborhood gatherings.
Cremation took place on September 16 and she will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Sue was one of my favorite cousins. Her charm and sense of humor endeared her to us. I recall her arriving at my parent’s home in McLean, Virginia, one Christmas day with a huge wreath made of peppermint candies! What could delight 3 children more! When we were with her we were uplifted by her grace of presence. What a treat to have known her and been with her as many times as we were in Virginia, Utah, and California. And for me, even in Greece. Wonderful memories of her and Frank too. Such fun! My parents, Kay and Don, loved her so much as did we Marelius kids. We always looked forward to her visits. She held such pride in her children and grandchildren and loved to be asked about them. I dearly will miss her as I know the the Lahr family will miss their lovely mother and grandmother. My genuine condolences to you for the loss of your darling mother here on earth. Love to you all, Anne Porter
