JAMES T. DRAUDE

(Age 64)

Jim Draude died August 16, 2011, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, PA, and attended Lancaster Catholic High School. He was in the National Honor Society, an Eagle Scout and principal altar server at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Jim graduated from Georgetown University (B.A., magna cum laude '69), where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and from Harvard Law School (J.D., cum laude '73). Jim's work at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he was employed for 10 years, included first chair civil litigation in federal trial and appellate courts throughout the United States. For several years Jim was the government's lead attorney in what became known as the Alexandria Waterfront Case, in which community requests were respected with the dedication of a large amount of open space to public use. He also supervised a team that prepared a two-volume manual of policies and procedures for the General Civil Litigation Section. Each year at Justice Jim earned outstanding job performance ratings and numerous awards.

Jim was then a partner in a small law firm, Driscoll and Draude, located in Georgetown, from 1989-2002, where he specialized in civil litigation and business law. He also served his community ANC and the Foggy Bottom Association in matters related to historic preservation, housing issues, and GWU's campus plans. Jim led his tenants' association to one of the first successful D.C. tenants' condominium conversions. Much of his neighborhood work was done on a pro bono basis.

Jim is mourned by his siblings Anne Michael, Tom Draude, Linda Nachtrab, and David Draude. He will be terribly missed by his long-time companion Marianna Moore.

Jim's ashes will be scattered on the Chesapeake Bay where he enjoyed boating for many years. Please consider registering as an organ donor for the many in need.

Guestbook

  1. Dear Marianna: Jim was such a talented and modest person. This is a special and moving tribute to the man and his contributions — to the law and to important societal issues. He was blessed to have your love and support in his life for so many, many years. Love, Les

  2. Marianna, I will miss seeing Jim “zoom” about in his little Toyota as he passed my house. He always looked as if he was on a mission. It was a delight to hear whenever he would come up with a quip or observation about what was going on around him. I am sorry for your loss.

  3. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. I hope what I am about to share will bring you a measure of comfort. The Holy Scriptures assure us that death along with the sorrow it brings will soon be a thing of the past. In fact, we have the wonderful opportunity to see our deceased loved ones again by means of a resurrection. (Hosea 13:14; 1st Corin 15:26; Rev 21:4) My deepest sympathy to each one of you…plm

  4. I was very sorry when I heard about Jim’s passing. He was a WONDERFUL PERSON! Jim was the first attorney I worked with when I joined the Lands and Natural Resources Division, Department of Justice in 1985 as a Paralegal. Of course, he was working on the Alexandria Waterfront project. He was not only a great and talented attorney he was a nice and considerate person. I never heard him speak ill of anyone……..a superb individual.
