Lola L. Wismer (1922-2017)

Lola L. Wismer passed away on March 17, 2017 in McLean, VA at the age of 94. She is survived by a son, Stephen J. Wismer (Linda) of Womelsdorf, PA and a daughter, Deborah A. Armitage (Robert) of Marco Island, FL (formerly McLean, VA), as well as five grandchildren, Stephen Wismer, Jr., Jennifer Wismer Bartole (David), James Wismer, Aimee Armitage Stanley (Christopher), and Emily Armitage, and seven great grandchildren. Her husband of 63 years, Col. John R. Wismer, preceded her in death in 2007.

Lola was the only child of the Jessie (James) and Homer Leach and was born October 6, 1922 in Mountain Grove, Missouri. She was raised in Grand Rapids and Vicksburg, Michigan, graduating in 1940 from Vicksburg High School. She attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she was honored as homecoming queen and met her future husband John, who following his graduation from Western served in the U.S. Marine Corps on the Pacific Front during World War II.

She married John on December 9, 1944 in LaPorte, Indiana, following his return home from the Pacific Front, where his bravery earned him a Silver Star commendation. After Col. Wismer's active service in the Marine Corps ended following World War II, Lola and John resided in Southern California until 1956, when they relocated to Chappaqua, NY. After 30 years in Chappaqua, the Wismers retired to Trappe, MD. Lola continued to reside in the Trappe-Easton area until 2015.

Lola was a homemaker and actively involved throughout her adult life in a variety of organizations. She particularly enjoyed participating in bridge club, study club, and investment club, as well as gardening. Lola was also an active member of the Women's Club of Easton and the Mid-Shore League of Republican Women. She was a member of the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin (Episcopal) in Chappaqua and the Church of the Holy Trinity (Episcopal) in Oxford, MD. She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, where her husband John was buried following his death, at a later date.
