Thomas R. Chittenden, 92, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, a resident of the Washington, DC area since 1940 and the Town of Vienna since 1957, where he served in the Town Council from 1960-62. A graduate of the University of Illinois and Harvard Business School, he served in the US Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Colonel. He had a long career at the National Security Agency and a varied second career after retirement, volunteering for the National Park Foundation, the National Peace Garden and other local organizations. He was an avid photographer and an active member of the Art League of Alexandria for many years. His beloved wife of 57 years, Virginia M. Chittenden, predeceased him in 2009. He is survived by his five children, Geoffrey, David (Jane Votca), Betsy (Daniel Sponn), Wendy Bley (Matthew) and Thomas F. (Tracy); as well as 11 grandchildren, Sam, Lea, Cara, Ashley, Emily, Frank, Matthew, Thomas J., Robert, Elizabeth and Lily Grace.
