Born in: Brooklyn, New York
Resided in: Vienna, Virginia

Eileen Catherine Gjormand, 88, of Vienna, Va. passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 15, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Eileen was born Eileen Catherine Durkin on May 4, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York. The daughter of the late Joseph Francis Durkin and Anne Marie Durkin (Farrell), Eileen grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in 1953.
While growing up in Bay Ridge, Eileen met the love of her life, Olaf Arvid Gjormand. After marrying Olaf in 1953, they moved back and forth between Virginia and New Jersey, before finally setting roots back in Virginia in 1962. Eileen moved into her final home in Vienna in August of 1963.

Though primarily a homemaker, Eileen also worked various jobs through the years including Lansburgh’s retail, Vincent and Vincent Hair Salon and for Fairfax County School Food Services. Eileen loved working in the Cafeteria at James Madison High School in the 80’s and early 90’s, treating all of the students that came through her line like her own children.

Over the years, Eileen had many hobbies and interests, such as bowling, ceramics and playing Bingo weekly at the Vienna Firehouse. Eileen enjoyed volunteering to be the “Team Mother” for numerous VYI and Vienna Little League teams that her sons played for over the years and also spent time on the VYI Ladies Auxillary. Eileen also cherished and thoroughly enjoyed the annual Gjormand family vacation trips to the beach over the years, whether it was in Ocean City at the Main House or in Rehobeth Beach at the Henlopen, the whole family, along with some friends had wonderful times and produced everlasting memories which Eileen still talked about years later. Eileen loved to host parties at her home especially Christmas Eves and hosting yearly 4th of July cookouts through the years. Eileen’s Motto was, “The more, the merrier,” where numerous friends of her children were always invited to join the party. One of Eileen’s absolute joys at the 4th of July parties was to watch all of her family and friends play the annual Gjormand family wiffle ball game in the back yard. Eileen was also known for her, “World Famous” Macaroni and Cheese, which was a staple at all family functions.

Above all else, Eileen’s favorite Interest/Hobby/Passion was spending time with her nine grandchildren (Brittany, Courtney, Scott, Michael, Matthew, Samantha, Josh, Trevor and Carlee) over the years and loved spoiling them, especially around the holidays, Christmas and Easter, and on their Birthdays.

Eileen is survived by her husband of 71 years, Olaf Gjormand; Her children Deirdre Magee (Marty), Brian Gjormand (Sheri), Christopher Gjormand (Pam), Mark Gjormand (Beth), Ryan Gjormand (Kristen) and nine beautiful grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 31, from 11am-1pm at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Ave. W Vienna, Va. 22180. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital https://www.stjude.org/
