Michael Charles O'Grady

November 11, 1955 ~ June 24, 2025
Born in:
Dallas, Texas
Resided in:
Fairfax, Virginia
Michael Charles O’Grady passed away peacefully on June 24, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born on November 11, 1955 in Dallas, Texas, to Irvin “Mike” and Norma Jean (Sayre) O’Grady. He was the fourth child and only son of six children.
Mike started his distinguished banking career as a teller at First Virginia Bank, working over the next 5 decades in various executive positions for several banks, winding up as Senior Vice President for commercial banking at Atlantic Union Bank from which he retired in 2022.
He was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, who devoted his life in service to his community. He was a member of the Distinguished Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Area where he was a former chairman. A devout Catholic, he was active in Our Lady of Good Counsel parish, where he served as chairman of the Financial Committee.
Mike suffered from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a genetic condition that plagues the O’Grady family claiming the lives of his father and two sisters and currently affecting many others in the family. Thanks to cousin, Greg Ireland, Mike had a successful kidney transplant in 2003. He faced recent health issues, always bouncing back, with his usual upbeat can-do spirit, a true inspiration.
He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Karen Brown and Timotha Rainey. Surviving him are his loving wife, Lana Kay O’Grady; children Chris O’Grady, Amber Fowler, and Shana Fowler; siblings Cheryl Czapp, Patti Ruffin and Terry Johnson; grandchildren Jordan, Khloe, Anthony, and Devin; a bundle of nieces and nephews who dearly loved their “funcle”; his constant canine companion, Mr. Darcy; and countless extended family members, friends, and colleagues who were fortunate to be part of his extraordinary life. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s honor can be made to the PKD Foundation https://pkdcure.org/ or the National Kidney Foundation. https://www.kidney.org/

And as for your favorite Gospel from Mark : “Jesus spoke to the storm and said, “Be Still.” The storm subsided.
Rest in peace ( of Christ)… and as we would always encourage each other with: “just climb up into your Father’s (Heavenly) lap, and let Him wrap Arm of Comfort and Calm around you.” I know you’ve made it, until we meet again!
Love, Peace and prayers of thanksgiving for you, and the gift of your friendship!
To Lana and Mike’s family, my most sincere condolences and prayers.

Mike was such an amazing human with the kindest soul and the warmest smile. He had a way to make you feel like you had been lifelong friends. He was generous in friendship and touched so many lives. And he will be missed.

It was lovely to see Mike at the reunion, and always fun to chat on Facebook. He was such an uplifting presence, and I will miss him. My prayers and deep condolences to his family.
I am ever so sorry for your loss. It was wonderful to see Gabe at our reunion last October. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Knowing that you are in the loving arms of God……peace brother.

Mike has been an incredible professional colleague and friend to me for over 20 years. Words cannot express how kind he was to me and often without even knowing it. He would always take the time to help me understand what I didn’t know about his banking world and make sure to introduce me to anyone that he thought I should know. I will be forever grateful for Mike and his mentorship!!
