Michael Charles O'Grady

michael o'grady

November 11, 1955 ~ June 24, 2025

Born in: Dallas, Texas
Resided in: Fairfax, Virginia

Michael Charles O’Grady passed away peacefully on June 24, surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born on November 11, 1955 in Dallas, Texas, to Irvin “Mike” and Norma Jean (Sayre) O’Grady. He was the fourth child and only son of six children.

Mike started his distinguished banking career as a teller at First Virginia Bank, working over the next 5 decades in various executive positions for several banks, winding up as Senior Vice President for commercial banking at Atlantic Union Bank from which he retired in 2022.

He was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, who devoted his life in service to his community. He was a member of the Distinguished Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital Area where he was a former chairman. A devout Catholic, he was active in Our Lady of Good Counsel parish, where he served as chairman of the Financial Committee.

Mike suffered from Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a genetic condition that plagues the O’Grady family claiming the lives of his father and two sisters and currently affecting many others in the family. Thanks to cousin, Greg Ireland, Mike had a successful kidney transplant in 2003. He faced recent health issues, always bouncing back, with his usual upbeat can-do spirit, a true inspiration.

He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Karen Brown and Timotha Rainey. Surviving him are his loving wife, Lana Kay O’Grady; children Chris O’Grady, Amber Fowler, and Shana Fowler; siblings Cheryl Czapp, Patti Ruffin and Terry Johnson; grandchildren Jordan, Khloe, Anthony, and Devin; a bundle of nieces and nephews who dearly loved their “funcle”; his constant canine companion, Mr. Darcy; and countless extended family members, friends, and colleagues who were fortunate to be part of his extraordinary life. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s honor can be made to the PKD Foundation https://pkdcure.org/ or the National Kidney Foundation. https://www.kidney.org/

  2. Michael was the best-salt of the earth. We are so thankful for the time we had here on earth to meet such a wonderful neighbor. We cherish his positive spirit, light, and friendship. He will be incredibly missed & will always be loved. Lana and family, we are very sorry for your loss and will be praying for you as you grieve and work through next steps. We are here if you need anything. 🙏🏻🤍

  3. Godspeed Mike ❤️ Prayers of comfort & healing for Lana & All Mike’s family & friends. Mike will be Forever missed & Never forgotten ❤️

  4. To Mike, my dear “brother-in-Christ” and confidant of almost 40 years. It has been a blessing to have walked alongside of you, for all these many years. Our lunches, men’s group meetings, shared Cursillo teams. Every text and regular emails, I will miss all of it ( and you).
And as for your favorite Gospel from Mark : “Jesus spoke to the storm and said, “Be Still.” The storm subsided.
Rest in peace ( of Christ)… and as we would always encourage each other with: “just climb up into your Father’s (Heavenly) lap, and let Him wrap Arm of Comfort and Calm around you.” I know you’ve made it, until we meet again!
Love, Peace and prayers of thanksgiving for you, and the gift of your friendship!
To Lana and Mike’s family, my most sincere condolences and prayers.

  5. My love and thoughts are with you all.
Mike was such an amazing human with the kindest soul and the warmest smile. He had a way to make you feel like you had been lifelong friends. He was generous in friendship and touched so many lives. And he will be missed.

  6. It was always good seeing Mike at a reception, big or small, official or not, and revisiting those school years of way back when. Or hearing about newer happenings. Your journey is done. Be at peace. To his beloved family my deepest condolences. May you find some solace in knowing the goodness that was always him, even as young boys on the school yard playground. You are missed Mike.

  7. It was hard to hear of Mike’s passing. Over the years, I have had the privilege of getting to know his family, and his warmth, generosity, and kindness have always been an inspiration to me. Mike was very kind, and it was easy to see the love he had for his family and community. Please know that I have been praying for you all during this difficult time. I will always remember Mike’s gracious spirit and the care he showed to everyone around him.

  9. I am ever so sorry for your loss. It was wonderful to see Gabe at our reunion last October. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

  10. Mike has been an incredible professional colleague and friend to me for over 20 years. Words cannot express how kind he was to me and often without even knowing it. He would always take the time to help me understand what I didn’t know about his banking world and make sure to introduce me to anyone that he thought I should know. I will be forever grateful for Mike and his mentorship!!
