Alice Jeannette Fain Hughes, age 87, of McLean, Virginia passed at her home surrounded by the love of her family on Sunday, August 7th, 2011 due to complications related to Leiomyosarcoma.

Hughes (Tonya), and Kathryn Hughes Romance (Kevin); seven grandchildren: Lauren, Henry Austin, Meghan, Patrick, Caitlynn, Candice, Jasmine; and one great granddaughter, Kaylee. She is predeceased by her brother Robert Fain and survived by her brother William (Mimi) Fain.
Alice was an avid reader who loved learning, discussing literature, traveling to explore new places and meeting new people, quilting, genealogical research, telling stories, gardening, bird watching, the visual and performing arts, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren, visiting Florida and combing the beaches. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia, Athens with a major in English Literature and a minor in Philosophy. She maintained a close tie with the Methodist Church as a child and young adult. She became a member of the Lutheran Church upon marriage for the rest of her life. As a young woman, Alice worked at the Pentagon weather mapping office during WWII, the University of Chicago, Medical Library Special Collections research department, and for American Airlines Reservations in Chicago. Alice's dream job was always to be a librarian.
She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, literature discussion groups and annual book collection fund raising events in the Milwaukee Wisconsin and then later in the McLean, Virginia. She was also a proud member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and The Colonial Dames.
Like many in her family before her, Alice dedicated the past 26 years of her life volunteering in the city of Washington DC, including the White House, The Smithsonian Institute; Smithson Quartet, National History Museum, National Air and Space Museum (DC and Udvar-Hazy Center); the Naturalist Center, Museum of Natural History; the American History Museum; and the Smithsonian Castle Information Desk.
She brought a spark of life and fun to the lives of those who knew her. She especially loved celebrations: birthdays, weddings, dances, and most of all the holidays. Alice's favorite was Christmas. Her over the top displays and gifts, every year exceeding the one before all for the enjoyment and wonderment of her grandchildren who forever delighted her heart.
She took life by storm and enjoyed every moment.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Lutheran Counseling & Family Services of Wisconsin at 3800 N. Mayfair Road, Wauwatosa, WI 53222; Web address www.lcfswi.org.

Charlotte, Kathy, Paul & Larry, Your Mom is one of the most delightful person I’ve ever met. I so enjoyed her honesty, wit & giggles. I am proud to have been given one of her prized hand-made quilts & will treasure it always. Playing and chatting at the river, walking at the beach; I will forever remember my visits with Alice & hold those memories very close to my heart. I know she will be so missed but I hope that you find comfort in knowing she was loved by so many and touch many lives. Much love to you all. Lizanne
