Anne Schwartz (89) of Northern Virginia died on May 14, 2025 at her home surrounded by loving family and friends.

Born September 14, 1935, in Washington, DC, Barbara Anne Smallwood Schwartz was the only child of Dr. W. Lawrence “Smally” and Marvel Smallwood. Proud to be a 16th generation Washingtonian, Redskin, and Nats fan; she was a graduate of Sidwell Friends School where she met her future husband, Richard “Dick” Schwartz. Dick played Center for Sidwell’s football team and when his front teeth were kicked in during a game, Anne immediately ran down to the field to volunteer her father’s dentistry practice. Smally did excellent work on his future son in law’s teeth and afterwards Anne and Dick were inseparable.

Anne’s true passion was children. She was a graduate of University of Maryland’s undergrad and graduate programs in early childhood education. Early in her teaching career, Anne worked for Sleepy Hollow Preschool, a COOP with an emergent curriculum model. In 1976, she founded Dolley Madison Preschool, an inclusive preschool program allowing staff and speech-language therapists to work collaboratively to support children with speech and language challenges.

After an awe-inspiring 55 years of teaching, she retired from Dolley Madison Preschool as founder, director, and one of the most cherished teachers at the school. “Miss Anne” had the pleasure of teaching multiple generations of families in her community along with several of today’s current teachers. Anne’s passion inspired her daughter, Dana, and granddaughters, Kelly and Heather, to follow in her footsteps.

Fun and witty, a true extrovert; Anne enjoyed tennis, golf, dominoes, poker, bridge, church, puzzles, campfire songs, catching up with former students at the grocery store, and knowing what was for dessert. She was a dedicated Nonnie who enjoyed family traditions, annual vacations to West Virginia and Bethany Beach; and all her grand and great-grand children and fur babies.

She was a devoted wife, preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick. Anne is survived by daughters Marianne (John), Betsy (Rick), and Dana (Skip); grandchildren Kelly (Andy), Jesse (Monika), Heather (Zack), Jack, AnnaLea (partner Austin) and Wesley. Great grands include: Kate, Mason, Charlie, Nolan, Rowan, Mila, and Evie. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and many wonderful friends.

Anne, and her family, would like to thank her care teams to include Cathy Tong, CFNP, Family Healthcare of Fairfax; the staff from Claudia’s Compassion Elderly Care LLC; and the Chesterbrook Residences team.
