Arthur Francis Cayer Jr., affectionately known as “Art,” passed away on May 26, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on June 24,1952, in Annapolis, Maryland, Art was the beloved son of the late Arthur Francis Cayer Sr. and Anna (Nancy) Dunn Burns.

Art was a proud graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting Systems. His early interest in business, sparked during his participation in Junior Achievement in high school, led him to a long and distinguished career in federal service. Art spent 15 years working at the U.S. Department Treasury / Bureau of Public Debt before continuing his career with the U.S. Marshals Services, where he worked until his retirement at age 60.

From an early age, Art displayed a curiosity and enthusiasm for technology and creativity. He enjoyed building model airplanes and ships, playing board games, and collecting comic books. In 1976, Art was among the first to embrace the personal computer revolution, purchasing and proudly holding onto one of the very first Commodore computers.

Art had a deep love of travel, which he enjoyed both for work and pleasure. Some of his most cherished memories were of annual spring trips to Hawaii with his parents during their retirement. After their passing, he and his sister Kitty continued the tradition, finding joy and peace in the islands they came to love.

In retirement, Art took up photography, initially as a way to connect more deeply with Kitty’s passion. Together, they traveled the country taking photography classes, meeting fellow enthusiasts, and capturing the beauty of wildlife, rugged mountains, and especially the night sky. Their travels took them on several memorable cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, New England, and Nova Scotia—always with cameras in hand and eyes open to the wonder around them.

In recent years, Art dedicated his photography talents to capturing the moments that mattered most—those shared with family. He became a familiar face on the sidelines of soccer and basketball games, camera in tow, cheering on his great-nieces and nephews and becoming a fixture at tournaments and local events. His presence— steady, supportive, and smiling—will be sorely missed by the children and their teammates alike.

Art is survived by his loving siblings: Frank, Richard & Karla, Kitty, Tim & Kathy Cayer, and Beth & John Day. He was a beloved uncle to James & Jill, Adam, Kyle, Kelly, Zach, Christina, Sterling, Casey & Mikayla, Anna Cayer, and Sean & Emily, Caitlin Day. He also leaves behind his cherished great-nieces and nephews: Hailey, Emily, Sadie, Noah Cayer, and Lane, Paige, Brooke, Cole, Reese, Blake, and Wade Day.

Art also maintained a lifelong friendship with his high school friend Bill, becoming an extended member of Bill’s family and spending cherished time with Bill, Mary, their children Ashley and Matthew, and their families.

A gentle soul with a kind heart and a quiet passion for discovery, Art will be remembered for his thoughtful nature, his enduring curiosity, and the deep love he had for his family and friends. He touched many lives and leaves behind a legacy of warmth, dedication, and beautiful memories.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
