Bruce O. Randall

November 29, 1922 ~ April 23, 2017
Bruce Randall of Reston, VA, died peacefully in his sleep on April 23, 2017, after battling the effects of congestive heart failure and leukemia. He was 94. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille, who he married in 1948.
Bruce was born in Waubay, SD, on November 29, 1922, to Fred and Alma Randall. He was an only child. He graduated from Waubay High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota State College (University) in 1943. While living in Endicott, NY, and working for General Electric, Mr. Randall earned an additional Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
Bruce served in the U.S. Army during World War II and, after being honorably discharged, joined the U.S. Army Reserve. He retired from the Reserve as a major in 1965.
After his wartime service, Bruce started his professional career with General Electric from which he retired in 1988 after 41 years of service. During his General Electric career, he lived in Schenectady and Endicott, NY; Danville, IL; Ormond Beach, FL; and finally in Reston, VA, where he retired. He was part of NASA's Apollo Program to put man on the moon during his time in Ormond Beach.
When his son Larry joined Cub Scouts in 1958, Bruce also joined the scouting program as an adult leader. When Larry moved on to Boy Scouts, so did Bruce. He remained a dedicated leader in Scouts for 50 years, earning numerous distinguished service awards including the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Boyhood.
Bruce also had a passion for stamp collecting and was an avid collector for most of his life, only recently giving it up. With his wife Lucille, he was a skilled bridge player, and he always enjoyed a good cribbage game with his father or son, Bryan.
After retiring, Bruce embarked upon a detailed genealogical study of his immediate family tree and all the connecting branches. He has produced three detailed volumes of birth, death and marriage of an incredible number of family members. His unfinished work will live on as a tribute to his tenacity and resourcefulness in compiling his family history.
Bruce was a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a member of Sigma Tau Engineering Honor Society. He received awards for distinguished service from General Electric, the Elfun Society, and from NASA for Apollo Achievement. Bruce was a long time member of Toastmasters International.
Bruce was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and most recently of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA. He could always be counted on for Sunday, Advent, Lent and church social participation. Bruce is survived by a daughter, Gloria Mullins of Rapidan, VA; two sons, Larry (Patricia Vokoun) of Reston, VA, and Bryan (Thuy Randall) of Flagstaff, AZ; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA on May 1, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, consider contributing to one of the following organizations that Mr. Randall supported: Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Vienna, VA, http://elcvienna.org/wp/ or Boy Scouts of America http://www.scouting.org/.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Our condolences to you and your family.
What an amazing man of integrity. He was my Scout Master in VA so many years ago, but his positive messages about personal responsibility, citizenship, and respect for community and history, all resonate today. He was in great shape, too. I remember 20-mile hikes in the early 1980s where he was fast and he knew his stuff. He was a great leader and a great mentor.
