Catherine I. Princiotto

May 22, 1924 ~ November 3, 2016
Died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, November 3, 2016 due to complications from infection after incurring a serious leg injury in September. She was born Catherine Mary Iannone on May 22, 1924 in New York City. She was the daughter and only child of A. Albert and Carmela Iannone. Her father was a highly regarded custom embroiderer and real estate investor; her mother was a homemaker and dress designer. She lived in New York City until she was 11 and then in Astoria, NY until she was 24. She received her Bachelors degree from Adelphi University in 1945 in just three years, and later, in 1951, received her Masters in Medical Social Work from Fordham University. Before getting married and raising a family, she worked in several hospitals including the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. She was a very dedicated wife and mother of five. Besides working full-time as a mother and homemaker, for many years she also actively volunteered in her community and with her childrens schools, clubs, teams and music groups. By the 1970's, she was back to working full-time for the next decade as a Special-Education teacher. Also beginning in the 1970's, over the next 20 years, she worked on the Governing Board of the Northwest Center for Community Mental Health, the Advisory Council for the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute, and for 25 years, beginning in the 1980's, she volunteered and cooked for the St. Luke Catholic Church (McLean, Va) Seniors Club. By the early 1990's, she retired from working in education and mental health and by 1993, she found a new calling as a very active grandmother. Along with her son, Joseph, she frequently took care of her two grandchildren with the utmost of love and dedication. It would become her favorite experience over the next 15 years. Nothing in the world surpassed her love for all children - caring for them, helping them and teaching them. It was truly her number one passion. Her other loves and joys throughout the years included her childhood time with her aunts, uncles, cousins and parents, attending Adelphi University, raising her children, having big family dinners and parties, cooking, drawing, playing the piano, listening to music, reading, writing in her journal, taking and archiving photographs, studying the dictionary and encyclopedias (especially geography), traveling by train or by car, doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and the warmth of Summer. She leaves behind her children, JoAnne Moncrief, Robert (Lisa), Peter, Karen (Collier) Irvin and Joseph, Jr., and two grandchildren, Zach and Catherine. She was widowed in 1992 after the death of her husband, Dr. J. V. Princiotto. The previously scheduled funeral mass and reception on December 19th, has been postponed. It will be rescheduled at a later date early next year.

I will miss the wonderful letters and calls from my cousin Kitty. She has been the one main connection to my father which I never knew due to his death at an early age. I am grateful for her continued interest in me and my family. She will be missed!
Robert, Peter, other Family Members: It is with much sorrow I heard of the passing of Your Mom. It’s been 45 years since I played music with Robert and Peter, yet I fondly remember her grace and kindness, which through all of these years has left its impression upon me. She was certainly proud of her all talented children, while her warmth and charm welcomed all. I fondly recall She, Peter and Robert teaching me the proper way to eat Pasta with a fork and spoon as opposed to a knife and fork. As perfect as God’s heaven must be I can only surmise that heaven is a bit more perfect with her in it and those of us she leaves on this earth have been most enriched for being touched by her Grace. With most heartfelt condolences! Steve Tingen
