Born in:
Vienna, Austria
Resided in:
Vienna, Virginia
Christopher Scott Bodde: Father, husband, brother, son, uncle, and retired senior CIA Officer.
Christopher Scott Bodde, 61, of Vienna, Virginia, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at his
home on April 12, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents Ingrid and William and his sister
Barbara (Lochte). He is survived by his wife Monica, daughter Helen, brother Peter, and several
nieces and nephews.
Christopher was an unconventional man who lived an extraordinary life. The son of U.S.
diplomats, he was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1963. His childhood was spread across Austria,
Sweden, Germany, and Maryland. At the age of only 16 he spent the spring and summer in the
South Pacific on a commercial tuna fishing boat before starting college at Tulane University of
New Orleans that fall. He graduated three years later at the young age of 19.
It was at this young age that Christopher started his career at the CIA, and it was a few years
later on his first tour abroad that he would meet his wife Monica.
Over a career spanning 33 years, Christopher, his beloved wife Monica, and, later, their
cherished daughter Helen, served throughout Latin America and Stateside. He also completed
several mission-critical, highly challenging tours alone in Latin America, the Middle East, and
Asia. He achieved the highest-ranking CIA position abroad, Chief of Station. He was also
Deputy Chief of Station on multiple occasions. He served on the team which located and
brought justice to our country’s greatest terrorist nemesis. He was also among the first CIA
officers into Iraq alongside the U.S. military.
Christopher was a natural leader of and widely-valued mentor to generations of younger officers
now reaching the highest CIA levels. He received numerous U.S. and foreign intelligence
decorations. His most prized included the rarely awarded CIA Intelligence Star, recognizing his
voluntary acts of heroism and courage in the face of considerable danger. He also received the
CIA Career Intelligence Medal for outstanding service and exceptional achievements over the
course of his career.
Throughout his life Christopher was an avid deep sea fisher, reader, foodie, and animal lover. He
made sure to share his passions with his daughter Helen and other loved ones. He spent his last
few years going on sailing adventures in the Caribbean, road trips with his brother Peter and
daughter Helen, and spending time with Monica and his poodle at home.
Christopher was a true hero and he will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and generations
of professional colleagues

Dear Monica,
You, Helen and certainly Chris are in my prayers. I can imagine he and Pope Francis exchanging stories with our good Lord. Perhaps Sergio from Silver Spring is with them!

Monica and Helen,
I am so sorry.
I got to know Chris very well a few years ago. He was a kind, nice person who had a big heart and a great sense of humor. He was also a great story teller. But what I remember the most about him is how incredibly proud he was (and still is) of you Helen. He talked about you and your accomplishments all the time. It is clear you (and your Mom) were the center of his life.
I will keep all of you in my prayers.
