Dr. John Eric Van Stavoren passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at INOVA Fairfax Hospital following a 33 year battle with chronic kidney disease. He was first diagnosed at the age of 15 but proceeded to persue his love of veterinary medicine even as he was undergoing dialysis and transplantation. Following his graduation from the Virginia-Maryland School of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, he practiced in North Carolina, Ohio, and Michigan before returning to Virginia where he was associated with the Battlefield Animal Hospital in Manassas for the past several years.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Van Stavoren of Vienna, VA, a brother, Christopher Van Stavoren of Montoursville, PA, a sister, Mrs. Edward Devens of Vienna, VA and three nephews.

Anyone wishing to honor Dr. Van Stavoren may do so through a donation to the National Kidney Foundation or to the Capital Hospice Palliative Care program.

  1. I remember John reading each of the James Herriot books in 10th grade in class. He loved animals and shared a copy of “All Creatures Great and Small” with me. He will be surrounded by all of the animals that he lovingly tended on this earth, I am sure.
