James Michael “Jim” Czaban passed away May 15, 2025, at home surrounded by family. He was born February 16, 1939, in Buffalo, New York. The family eventually moved to Schenectady where Jim grew up with three brothers and one sister. He attended Union College and Clarkson College, then went west to seek opportunity in Los Angeles where he met his eventual bride of 61 years, Kate (known as Kathie to some). While also serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, Jim got an entry-level job at Title Insurance and Trust Company and ended up being “in the right place at the right time” (as he put it) to learn the future: computers.
Jim and Kate married in July 1963 in Phoenix, then headed east to settle in northern Virginia, where they spent the rest of their life together including more than 50 years in the same house in McLean. Jim spent most of his career working on computer systems for the federal Department of Agriculture. During their retirement years, he and Kate enjoyed traveling internationally and spending winters in the warmth of Scottsdale among a community of friends and family. In his spare time, Jim loved tinkering with computers and the family cars, playing blackjack, and keeping tabs on the stock market and current events.
Jim is survived by his wife Kate, his three children Jim (Beth), Steve (Deana), and Ann Marie (Jim Watson), and four grandchildren, Natalie, Alyssa, Catherine, and Megan. He never shied from expressing his pride in them all.
A celebration of Jim’s life is being planned for June or early July, with details to follow.

I cannot express to you enough how much I love you all even at such a distance. The influence on my life and memories of my youth with you and the family will never be forgotten! We have had great times! Schroon Lake, Alplaus, Mclean, MD, holidays and just popping in during travel to spend the night grab dinner or say a quick hello! Uncle Jim will be very missed! He lived a great life and will now live a life of beautiful peace well deserved In Jesus name! 🥲🙏🕊️🩵🌷
Aunt Kathie and Family,
We are deeply saddened by the loss of your beloved husband, father, grandfather, and our dear Uncle Jim. Highly successful in all his endeavors, his life was defined not by titles or accolades, but by the undying love he gave to his family, always putting his children and grandchildren above all else, and finding his greatest joy in their success and happiness. Never do we remember an occasion he did not share the triumphs of his kids and grandkids. We always loved the way he called Aunt Kathy his “bride,” an example of his devotion and love for his lifelong best friend and a life built together. We always enjoyed conversations with him; I recall many he and I had on the drives to and from Annapolis when he shuttled me back and forth on visits and welcomed me into his and Aunt Kathie’s home for the weekend. We distinctly recall his wishes on our own wedding tape -“love and friendship to last a lifetime.” He will be greatly missed. May you find comfort in the memories of his warm heart, steady guidance, and the deep love that will live on in each of you.
With heartfelt sympathy and love,
Eric & Teresa

Our escapades to Santa Anita race track, Las Vegas, Reno and later to Phoenix, Az to celebrate the union of Kathy and Jim in the middle of July. My visit to their home in Maclean, VA where we were treated like royalty was very humbling. It’s a sad time where I have my two best friends and roommates, Ken Lewis and now Jim Czaban.
