JEWEL MARIE DUGGAN (Age 86)

Of McLean, VA passed away peacefully on July 26, 2011 at the Virginia Hospital Center after a short battle with Acute Leukemia. She is preceded in death by her husband William A. Duggan. She is survived by her loving daughters: Julia "Julie" Popp of California, MD and Alice Watkinson of Toano, VA; their husbands, Mike and Tony; four adoring grandchildren: Christine, Karl, Wes and Emily; and a great-grandson: Chase. She is also survived by numerous brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews who reside in Texas and Louisiana.

Marie was born in Overton, TX to Robert and Bernice Gramling, and grew up in that area. She attended Baylor University where she received a degree in Biology. As a favor to one of her teachers she agreed to teach science for a year at the London School in New London, TX. She was a natural at teaching, and loved it so much that she turned it into a career. She moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1957 when she married. A year later she and her husband moved to the Virginia suburbs where she remained for the rest of her life. She taught in both public and private schools; the majority of those years at Kent Gardens Elementary in McLean, Va. Upon retiring in the early 80's, she devoted herself to her children and grandchildren.

Marie was an eternal optimist who had an infectious smile and a gentle demeanor. Always kind and considerate, she encouraged all of those around her. She was loved by her family, admired by her students and co-workers, and adored by all who truly knew her. Marie will be greatly missed!

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Aug 6 at Garfield Memorial Christian Church in McLean, Va. The family will receive friends following the ceremony. A private inurnment will take place later in the year when she is laid to rest with her husband in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Marie's name to your local hospice/palliative care organization or local blood bank.

  1. I was sad to learn of the death of Mrs. Duggan. She was one of my 6th grade teachers at Kent Gardens in 1975. Mrs. Duggan always had a smile and was very patient. I also know she helped me become much better at math. I actually had the chance to see her again a few years ago at Kent Gardents 50th birthday celebration. She was just as nice that day as I always remembered her. All teachers should be like her!!
