RIP Joe. Our condolences to all the family members.
Joe got joy from ordinary things, and then he shared that joy with others. Everybody admired Joe. It makes me feel very lonely knowing that Joe is gone.
I am the proud owner of a dining room chair from the Joe Dressler Collection of fine home furnishings. I first met Joe 24 years ago when I rented a room from him. At the time he had a very rusty Chevrolet Suburban which still had a few patches of green paint. He cruised around the far reaches of Fairfax County searching for treasures with his Chevy Suburban. He found two broken dining room chairs – one had a maple finish and broken back and the other had a cherry finish and a broken leg. Joe cut the broken back off the first chair and all the legs off the second chair. Then he screwed the seats of these two broken chairs together to make one chair with a somewhat thick seat. When I moved out to buy my own house I bought this chair from Joe. I treasure this chair because it reminds me of Joe. It is clever, functional, unpretentious, hilarious, looks good, and has a good story to go with it.
Dad was placed to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, following a ‘full honors’ ceremony on Tuesday, Sept 14, 2011.
Joe was a long time good friend. We served in JCS at the same time. Later went through school in Pax River headed for different P3 squadrons. Very intelligent man.
Dear Joe, So sorry for your illness and your passing. I have great memories of our time in the Navy. I was in the class of Hospital corpsman in 1953.We were great pals. Love you, Alice Fletcher
“Chauncy” or “Dud” as he was known to us growing up in the small South Jersey town of Egg Harbor City was quite a character! His youngest brother, Jimmy, and I were best friends back in the 50’s; I spent a lot of time at the Dressler homestead. He (Joe) played banjo in our dixieland jazz band from time to time (I played trumpet) and one particular time stands out in my memory involving a gig at the Dennis Hotel in Atlantic City. I’ll spare details but suffice to say I never laughed so hard in my life due to Joe’s antics. Jimmy and I also joined the Navy following in Joe’s footsteps. I happened to be thinking of Joe today when I learned of his passing via obit on the web. What fond memories of such an extraordinary man… R. Lee Walther / Barre, VT
