Joseph P. Hillock, Jr. (Age 89)
Passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 in Fairfax, VA, after a stroke. Born in Allentown, PA on January 1, 1928 to Joseph and Anna (Yock) Hillock, he was a 1945 graduate of Maryland Park HS in Capitol Heights, MD. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1951 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned as an officer in the U. S. Air Force.
During his early Air Force career he served as a pilot and staff engineer, and earned his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH. Later he was a project engineer and Deputy Director working on missile and satellite development projects in the Air Force’s Space and Missile Systems Organization in El Segundo, CA. He proudly served in Vietnam with the 360th Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (nicknamed “Antique Airlines”) as an EC-47 aircraft commander, conducting electronic warfare missions out of Tan Son Nhut Air Base, near Saigon. For these missions he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.
In 1972 he and his family moved to Fairfax, VA when he was assigned to the Department of Defense’s Defense Intelligence Agency in Arlington, VA, where he worked on imagery collection programs. Later he transferred to Andrews Air Force Base, MD, where he retired in 1981, at the rank of Colonel. Transitioning to civilian life, he worked as a military contractor in support of Navy and Air Force aircraft and missile programs.
He is survived by three sons, Brian Joseph Hillock, Kevin Charles Hillock and Craig Steven Hillock; Brian's wife, Ruth (Parker) Hillock and two granddaughters, Jennifer Roselina Hillock, daughter of Kevin, and MaryRose Hillock, daughter of Brian and Ruth. His marriage to Glenrose (Aldred) Hillock ended in divorce. He is also survived by his longtime partner, Marcie Lee Geschwindner and her family. He enjoyed attending Naval Academy football games with his academy classmates and was a lifelong fan of his beloved Washington Redskins and the Washington Senators/Nationals.
Burial will take place on Friday, May 18, at 1:00 pm at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
