Margie Grady Luke died peacefully at her home in Fairfax County, VA at the age of seventy seven on September 6, 2017.

Margie was born in Philadelphia and graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic Girls High School. As a teenager she took up ice skating and horseback riding. She began her academic studies at Rosemont College but soon moved with her family to Annapolis. She continued her studies at the University of Maryland while pursuing a career as a legal secretary and later as an advertising account manager. She met her future husband, Don, through the Three Mile Limit Sailing Club of Washington D. C. while sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. After marrying in 1968 they lived for a time in Southwest D. C. and then settled in Fairfax to raise their family.

She continued her studies at the University of Maryland and George Mason University, graduating in 1985 with BFA and from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992 with Master of Art Ed. She taught art at St. Leo Elementary School, St. Mary’s Academy and Bishop O’Connell High School. She completed a mural for a local business and several for her home. Her murals for friends’ children’s rooms were particularly popular.

Margie was a collector of people and made friends everywhere she went. She loved entertaining and served food from many different cultures, but her absolute favorite was Mexican. Margie loved life and her wit and wisdom brought smiles to everyone she met. She was a big fan of the Maryland Terrapins and followed her beloved Redskins religiously, even trying to coach from her seat in the living room.

She is survived by her husband, Don, of Fairfax; her daughter, Monica Moriak (Chris), of Newark, DE; her son, Graham Luke (Cindy), of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle, & Casey Luke and Aaron & Brendan Moriak. She is also survived by her sisters, Kate Schneider (Doug) and Monica Grady, of Fredericksburg; her brother, John Grady, of Fairfax; and nieces, Germaine and Jennifer Schneider.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 3700 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 11:00 am with interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax.

Guestbook

  1. Mrs Luke (never could have called her Margie even if she had asked) was a huge influence on me growing up. She was so smart and cultured. She spoke foreign languages and painted beautiful pictures of things I had never seen or even imagined. She laughed (she had the best laugh) at jokes I didn’t understand, but I laughed because she did. She was a force of nature and I adored her.
Thank you, Mrs Luke for teaching me so much and always encouraging me to do better.

    Jennifer (Karlinsky) Testerman
