Dr. Nelson Monroe Tart, age 87, of McLean, VA died on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at the Fairfax Nursing Center. He was born on June 18, 1925 in Harnett County, NC. He graduated from Dunn High School and received a B.S. from Wake Forest College in 1949. He also served in the Navy in WWII from 1944-1946. Nelson received an M.D. from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1955. After internship and residency at DC General Hospital and GWU Hospital in 1959 he joined the faculty of GWU School of Medicine. Nelson distinguished himself at GWU in the clinical teaching of residents and medical students and was a founding physician of Fairfax Hospital.

In 1960, he moved to McLean and started a thriving private practice in obstetrics and gynecology in Falls Church, VA that continued for 36 years. He delivered thousands of babies in Northern VA and the District of Columbia as a practicing physician at GWU Hosptial, Arlington Hospital, Northern Virginia Doctor's Hosptial and Fairfax Hospital.

The recipient of many professional awards and accolades, Nelson served as President of the Fairfax County Medical Society in 1974 and President of the Northern Virginia Obstetrical Society in 1975. In 1996, he was selected to receive the Physician of the Year Award by the Fairfax County Medical Society, an honor that has been given only three times since the Society's founding in 1884. In 1997, he was granted the status of Clinical Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the GWU Medical Center.

Throughout his long career, Nelson was recognized as a leading practitioner in operative obstetrics and a role model for other physicians. He was well known and appreciated by all who worked with him for his compassion, commitment to patient care and respect of others.

Nelson was a faithful member of McLean Baptist Church for over 50 years. He loved music and reading, and was an avid skier. After his retirement in 1996, Nelson devoted a significant part of his time visiting church members and other friends who were patients at local hospitals and nursing centers. His generous spirit, sense of humor and distinctive "bow tie" attire will be missed by his family, many friends and former patients and colleagues.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 47 years, Irene Coggins Tart. He is survived by two daughters, Pamela Krizay (Thomas) of Reston, VA and Sandra Tart (Leslie Croland) of Boca Raton, FL; and three granddaughters, Erin Krizay, Harlyn Croland and Kirby Croland. Survivors also include his three sisters, Alese Hobson, Llewellyn Jernigan, and Betty Sercy, all residents of Dunn, NC and a large and loving extended family also residing in North Carolina.
