Anne Dorothy McCarty

anne mccarty
Anne was born and raised in Flushing, New York to Dominica Ruccia in 1928 and lived a humble life. The only girl in an Italian family she had 3 brothers, Nicholas, Daniel and Vincent. As her father had abandoned the family when she was very young, her brothers provided for the family and her mother, and were the men who helped shape to her life.

She was an attractive, popular girl with an infectious laugh and an easy smile that was her trademark throughout her life. Her memory was amazing and she continued to share stories of her mother and brothers with her family until her last days.

Her family and her faith were the most important things in her life and the family’s early adversity bonded them to her forever. Anne’s faith supported her throughout her life and whenever difficult times arose, her faith guided her path.

When their country called for WWII her brothers (Army, Navy & Marines) answered and Anne was left stateside with her mother, who took a job as a superintendent of a building, shoveling coal and mopping the hallways in exchange for rent. Anne won a scholarship to a catholic high school in Flushing where she excelled- especially in history. She was an avid reader and loved books of all kinds. She lost her younger younger brother Vincent, who she was very close with, when he was 21 and this saddened her throughout her life.

Anne married a career Navy man, Lester McCarty in March of 1952 and began the life of a Navy wife traveling the world with her husband. The couple had 3 children, Kathryn, Lester Jr. and Steven- who survive Anne, but sadly her marriage ended in 1978 and Anne started over with little but her experience to fall back on and her sons to pick up where her brothers had left off.

Anne’s faith was a dominant force in her life and it saddened her to see the erosion of the traditional Roman Catholic Church. She found a great peace and community in her church of the last dozen years, St. Athanasisus in Vienna Virginia. There they practiced the traditional Latin Rite mass in a more devout manner that she had come to love through a life of faith.

Anne was the last remaining member of the Ruccia/ Russo clan and also had a large extended family from her brothers Nick and Danny. She leaves behind seven nieces and nephews; Daniel Jr, Thomas, James, Peter, Virginia, Robert and Mary Anne. She also leaves her 7 grandchildren; Christel, Stephanie, Vincent, Jack, Maryn, Owen, Erin, and her great grandson Finley.

Anne’s life was extraordinary- blessed and cursed, but won. She lived her life with grace , dignity and courage that few of us ever achieve. Her body is lost to us now but her spirit will never be forgotten and she will continue to watch over her family forever.

  2. One of my oldest and favorite memory to my Aunt came when I was a young child. She loved to bake Angel Food cake from scratch but, apparently , by adult standards was not the good at it. Not to my young taste buds. I would smell the lovely smell, she would take it out of the oven and a vaguely remember it kind of sinking. Everyone shunned her Angel Food cakes but me. I loved them and she would aways laugh and tell me she loved me for loving her cakes and it made me so happy. To this day, and I am now 72, I still remember those cakes and every time I see, bake, buy or eat a piece I think of her and that smile and hug I would get for being her biggest Angel Food fan.
