Carole Ann Hoffman

carole hoffman
Carole Ann (Hayes) Hoffman was born in Bennington, Vermont on March 28, 1942 to her parents John and Betty Hayes. She was raised in a devout family, was educated in Catholic school, and ultimately attended business college to pursue a degree in administrative services. She moved to Washington DC to pursue a lifelong career as an administrative assistant and office manager, ending her career when she retired after 25+ proud years at the CIA.

Carole met Horace Edward Hoffman in Alexandria Virginia and married him in 1968. They stayed married for 26 years until Horace passed away at home in September of 1994. Fiercely independent and never wanting to ask for help, Carole deeply loved her husband throughout his extended battle with Alzheimer’s and quietly managed his care to ensure he maintained his dignity and was able to spend his final days in their family home.

Together, Horace and Carole raised 2 children and more than a dozen beloved pets; Carole had a particularly strong love for Golden Retrievers. And Carole loved no one as much as her grandchildren, Gavin, Nate, and Oakley, whom she spoiled endlessly with gifts and traditions. She was never happier than when she spent time with family at Keuka Lake in western New York. She was artistic and crafty and mastered many different hobbies including sewing, flower arranging, upholstery, and gardening; her green thumb is legendary and she was particularly proud of her last few crops of cucumbers and tomatoes.

Carole is survived by her son Jason Horace Hoffman with wife Kerri and their daughter Oakley, her daughter Erin Scruggs with husband Gary and their sons Gavin and Nate, her brother Bill Hayes and his wife Camilla, her sister-in-law Gail Hayes, brother-in-law George Pratt, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved to hear about and root for (Susan, Erik, Heather, Jessica, David, Marcy, Lise, George, Duffy, Mariella, John and Harry ).

In her later years, close friendships sustained her, and she deeply loved time around her kitchen table with Sue Dutta, Marcy Burke, Lise Pratt, and Kathy Sprissler.

She is pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Horace Hoffman, her parents, Betty Vail Hayes and John Hayes, her sister-in-law Carol Pratt, her sister-in-law Marc and her youngest brother, JT (John Hayes).

A funeral service will be held Saturday, October 23, 11:00 am, at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Ave West, Vienna, VA 22181

Guestbook

  1. My deepest sympathy to Jason and Erin and their families. So sorry for your loss. JT and I always had so much fun whenever we were at Carole’s house. I will never forget the night we went to a bar and Horace had a rubber chicken. We all laughed and laughed.

  2. Jason, Erin, and families-I am so sorry for your loss! I sadly didn’t get to talk to Aunt Carole often, but her boisterous laugh will be greatly missed! I loved being able to chat with her if I was over and dad was on the phone. She would often message and say how much she loved seeing pics of the kids! She would always mess with us and send Patriots gear for Killian. She was also a huge support when dad passed. She would message right away and love any tribute I posted for him, saying how proud he was of me and how beautiful the children the are. XO sending tons of love your way!

  3. I never had the privilege of meeting Carole but I feel like I know her through Erin. Sending all my love and prayers to Carole’s family and friends who I know will miss her dearly.
