Chong-Son Poulsen

Chong-Son (Chon) Poulsen, 73, of Oakton, Virginia passed away on April 29, 2022. She was born on May 21,1948, the second of five children of Un-Sik Chon and Sun-Tol-I Yi, in Gosung, Korea. Upon immigrating to the United States in 1976, she lived in Lanham, Maryland with her older sister, Chong-Cha, and worked in hospitality until meeting her husband, John Poulsen. They were married on March 1, 1980, and settled in Virginia where she went on to have three sons.
Chong-Son exuded a quiet grace and dignity that belied a steely determination and indomitable spirit. She was a dedicated and creative homemaker, a talented cook, a generous and caring hostess, and, above all, a doting and loving mother. While her culinary skills included many classic Korean dishes, she mastered a wide range of entrées and desserts of American, Italian, and Danish cuisine. An avid gardener and forager, Chong-Son loved beautiful flowers and all varieties of vegetables. One of her favorite past times was harvesting leaf lettuce and hot peppers with her older sister. Chong-Son always encouraged her boys to eat “one more bite” and took pleasure in providing those around her with food, comfort, and a sense of home, especially during holidays. She enjoyed family celebrations at The Peking Gourmet Inn with a meal that included Peking duck and plum wine. Chong-son enjoyed traveling with her husband and sons. Always caring and thoughtful of others, she delighted in gifting curated souvenirs and trinkets from her travels to friends and family upon returning. Her easy smile and laugh accompanied a well-developed sense of humor that found joy in all phases of life.
Chong-Son is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband of 42 years, John, her sons Niels (Kelly), Dennis (Carly), and James, grandsons Lukas, Carter, and Christian, her older sister, Chong-Cha, brother-in-law, Craig, nephew, Thomas (Theresa), brothers Chae-Hyuk, Chin-Hyuk, and Yong-Taek (Annie), niece, Caroline, other nieces and nephews, and her many friends, admirers, and family members in Korea, Denmark, and Virginia.
Services private. While Chong-Son battled Alzheimer’s, she was gifted a transplanted kidney for the final 14 years of her life. As such, in lieu of flowers, her family requests donations in Chong-Son’s honor to the National Kidney Foundation (www.kidney.org/donation) or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org/donate).
