Christine S. Monett

Christine Catherine Rose Stefani Monett (Nina/Chris) 85 of McLean, Virginia passed away from lung cancer on 18 November 2021. Chris was born in Summit, New Jersey on 8 August 1936 as the second child of four born to Baldasare Stefani and Philomena Altieri. She graduated from Chatham High School in NJ, in 1954. She received her Associate in Arts Degree with a major in Liberal Arts, Magna Cum Laude, from Northern Virginia Community College at the age of 66.

Chris worked for three years for Chubb & Son Underwriters as a secretary. She went to Washington, DC in January 1958 to accept a job with the CIA. From April 1961 to November 1963 Chris was assigned to the U.S. Embassy, Madrid, Spain. Chris moved back to DC in 1963. In August 1966 she was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Rome, Italy where she met her husband Jon N. Monett, also with the CIA. Their first date was at a wonderful restaurant called Casalone’s on the Via Flaminia, which they returned to 30 years later. Jon and Chris married on 2 August 1969 at Our Lady of Peace Church, in New Providence, NJ. The couple moved to Frankfurt, Germany where she worked until the birth of their son, Scott Andrew in November of 1970. They returned to the United States in the summer of 1972 and lived in McLean, VA where their daughter Cynthia Lynn was born in October that same year. Jon and family were transferred to Japan the summer of 1975 for a three-year tour, returning to McLean in 1978. Christine made many friends in Japan, loved the culture and the people, and was able to see much of the country, including a climb of Mount Fuji. After a 5-year stint in McLean, the Monetts moved back to Frankfurt in 1983 when her husband was given a senior position with the Agency, necessitating the continuous entertaining of many dignitaries and work-related visitors. Chris resumed employment with the Agency part time. The family traveled extensively throughout Europe experiencing good times and fond memories. They returned to McLean in 1987 and in 1989 Chris returned to Langley full-time. She retired from the CIA in 1996 as an analyst for the Operations Directorate.

Chris enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter KC and her many friends and family. She also loved gardening, reading, concerts, operas, plays of all sorts, art exhibits, foreign films, entertaining, sightseeing, and aerobics. She had vast circles of friends including her roommates from her first apartment in DC, friends from the Agency, people she met while living overseas, the Palladium, the McLean Racquet & Health Club, her Italian group, her Church, her book clubs, and many others.

She is survived by her Husband Jon Monett, her Children Scott and Cindy Monett, her granddaughter Katherine Christine Kostrna, all of McLean, VA; her brother Raymond Stefani and his wife Dolores, of Basking Ridge, NJ; her brother Richard Stefani and his wife Marianne of Berkley Heights NJ; her Sister-in-Law, Suzanne Sullivan of Monroe Township, NJ; and her many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Chris was predeceased by her parents and brother Joseph Stefani.

Visitation will be at Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Ave W, Vienna, VA 22180 from 4-7pm on Friday, December 3rd. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, VA 22182 on Saturday December 4th at 1pm. The funeral will be followed by a repast. She will be interred at Flint Hill Cemetery.
