David McKee

Dave passed away on August 23, 2021, at the age of 79 after an eighteen-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, the second son of Col. Richard and Dorothy McKee.

Dave is survived by his wife Judith (Everett), two sons, Douglas and Matthew, a daughter, Catherine Sribar, two wonderful daughters-in-law, Julie and Margot, a remarkable son-in-law, Val, the World’s Most Perfect Grandchildren (WMPGs), Allison, Austin, Mark, Ryan, Trevor, Alexa, Aspen, and David, two great grandchildren, Benjamin and Henry, numerous well-beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews, a brother of the heart, David Muong, and a son of the heart, Ahmed Palassi, his wife, and children.

Dave met Judy, the love of his life, in Carlisle, PA, where they both graduated from high school in 1959. He subsequently graduated from VMI in 1963 with honors in physics, a commission as a 2LT in the US Army, and Judy as his bride.

Dave would enthusiastically tell you that he spent the bulk of his life in public service to a nation he loved. Dave’s 24 years of Army service included two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded four bronze stars, the air medal, and a CIB. While still in the Army, Dave graduated from the US Naval Postgraduate School with an MS in Operations Research/Systems Analysis. He was later selected for command of a nuclear artillery battalion in Germany and then as the Professor of Military Science at James Madison University (JMU). It was at JMU that he discovered his love of teaching. After five years of working at BDM International, Dave returned to education and spent the next fifteen years teaching math at South Lakes and McLean High Schools. He was an active volunteer in his childrens’ various sports and scouting activities, with his Shouse Village community, and with his church.

A quiet, spiritual man of firm integrity, he will be remembered as fiercely loyal to his family, his country, and the men and women with whom he was honored to serve.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on September 4 at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, Vienna, with burial at Arlington Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Homes for our Troops, one of Dave’s favorite charities.

  1. To the McKee family, I am so sorry for your loss. I met David through his intelligent, dedicated wife Judy when we worked together at the Nat’l Association of Attorneys General. It was clear he was a devoted, in love husband and family man. His service to his country will not be forgotten. In sympathy, Marjorie McKee (formerly Tharp)
