Dorothy M. Flood (nee McCauley), (age 87), of Vienna, Virginia, formerly of Arlington, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully in her home on September 4, 2022.

Born December 10, 1934, the only daughter of William J. and Winifred McCauley, she grew up in Medford, Massachusetts along with her brother, Billy (James W.).

In 1956, she was among the first class of women who graduated from Boston College where, she met her future husband, Francis P. "Frank" Flood. They were married for 55 years of marriage before he passed.

Shortly after marrying, they welcomed Rex into their family, quickly followed by 4 children. Rex immediately took on the roles of protector and babysitter, making him even more cherished. While raising her growing family with the help of Rex, her parents, and her favorite Aunt Betty, she was able to work on her career.

In 1976, the family moved to Virginia eventually settling in Vienna and joining Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Dorothy was very active in the Catholic Church, starting a senior citizens luncheon as support for her mother who had moved with the family to Virginia. She joined the Business Department at Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School and was the head of the Future Business Leaders of America. Eventually, she became the Business Administrator for the school and remained in that position until she retired 17 years later in order to spend more time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her grandchildren, she remained busy with travel and volunteer work, was a devoted parishioner of OLGC, spent hours calling members of The Woman's Club to provide food for funeral luncheons, helped collect food for SOME (So Others Might Eat) in Washington, DC, and spent many years volunteering at The Shepherd's Center of Northern Virginia. She joked that no one would take her calls anymore because she was always asking somebody for something. She enjoyed socializing so she started Dining with Dorothy, a popular monthly luncheon group that was enjoyed by many. She was also active with the Red Hatter's Club. In 2017, the Mayor of Vienna honored her for her volunteer work to celebrate her many years of service to the community.

She is survived by her four children, Linda, Robert (Mary Anne), Paul (Karen), and Kathy (Malcolm); her grandchildren, Trevor, Lauren (Zach) Moore, Amanda, Emma, Daniel, Annabelle, Caroline, and a great-granddaughter, Hadley.

Her viewing will be at Money and King Funeral Home in Vienna on Sunday, September 18 from 4 to 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Vienna on Monday, September 19 at 11am. Reception to follow. Burial will be at Quantico National Cemetery at 2pm.

As Quantico limits flowers to two arrangements, the family requests in lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favorite charity. The online guestbook is available at www.moneyandking.com

  3. My deepest condolences to the Flood family for their loss of Dorothy. She was always graceful and I would see her often at church or at the local grocery store. She will be missed.

  4. So sorry to hear of Dorothy’s passing. She was a dear friend of my mom Betty Somerville who died just a few days before her. They had lots of good times together participating in activities at OLGC, SOME and the Shepherds Center and when my mom moved to Illinois to be near to my sister; Dorothy was reliable for maintaining contact throughout the ups and downs of the pandemic. My condolences to Dorothy’s family. I am sorry I will not be able to attend the funeral as we don’t travel from Arizona until Wednesday.
