Obituary for Edward Michael Atwood

Ed was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, but lived much of his life in Springfield, Virginia. A military veteran, he served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy for three years during World War II. After the war, he returned to Omaha and earned a degree in accounting from Creighton University in 1950.
Professionally, Ed worked as a supervisory auditor and management analyst for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 37 years. He received a letter of commendation from the USDA for his supervisory work on the audit of the national Food Stamp Program. He also was recognized for his management of the USDA’s Inspector General Directives Program.
Outside of work, Ed was active in his community working with the Springfield Little League, Babe Ruth League and Boys Club. He was the Treasurer of the Springfield Racquet and Swim Club. And he was active in his church where he was a charter member of Knight of Columbus Council 6153 at St. Bernadette’s.
A devoted family man, Ed loved nothing more than spending time with his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed many trips to Walt Disney World with them and was a big Disney fan overall. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Patricia. He is survived by his six children, Michael, Thomas, Susan, Robert, Mary Pat Weyback, and John; nine grandchildren, Timothy, Kristen, Brian, Carolyn, Rachel, Justin and Abigail Atwood and Matthew and Katherine Weyback; and one great-grandchild, Skylar Atwood. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in Springfield, VA at 10:30 a.m., on Monday, October 8, 2018. A reception will immediately follow the Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Knights of Columbus Charities (www.kofc.org/un/en/charities).
