Edward Robert (Bob) Whittington, DDS, of Gainesville, VA, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at the age of 82.

Bob was born on July 3, 1937 in New York to Ernest and Elaine Whittington. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, VA in 1955. He then enlisted in the US Air Force and served 4 years. He attended the University of Richmond and then went to the Medical College of Virginia where he graduated in 1966 from the School of Dentistry. He married his high school sweetheart, Anne Pittman Whittington (now deceased), in 1958 and the couple had three children. They moved to Northern Va where Bob opened his own dental practice in Vienna, and he continued to work there until his retirement in 2004.

Bob is survived by his son, Richard Michael Whittington and his wife, Melissa (Vienna, VA); his son, Charles Mark Whittington and his wife, Tina (Centreville, VA); his daughter, Lori Lynn Zampiello and her husband, Mario (Chantilly, VA); his 8 grandchildren, Daniel Dixon, his wife Shelly and great granddaughter Evelyn Grace, Nathan Whittington and his wife Kate, Bryan Whittington and fiance Nikki Jacona, Devon Zampiello, Taylor Zampiello, Danielle Whittington, Andrew Whittington and Payton Zampiello; as well as his sister, Cheryl Baynes and her husband, Fred (Richmond, VA).

Bob was a true friend to so many. He was loyal and kind, and would do anything for anyone. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always the first to crack a joke or tell a story! He was strong, stoic, and stood up for what he believed in, a trait that many admired. But he was also a gentle giant with a huge heart and he loved his family and friends unconditionally. His last few years were physically challenging, yet he never complained. He is finally at peace and pain free.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 1:00 pm at Money & King Funeral Home located at 171 Maple Avenue W, Vienna, VA 22180. Pastor Peter James will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bob’s life.

  1. Oh, my. I am so sorry to hear this awful news. Dr. Bob was my dentist for years even before his office was on Beulah Lane. Two times a year faithfully, I trekked to see Dr. Bob. When he retired, I saw Dr. Richard. They were like family to me. My fillings are still strong. Please accept my sincere condolences. I am devastated for your loss. Carol A. Steketee

  2. I’ve been honored to have Mark Whittington as one of my closest of dearest friends for more than 40 years, in that time I grew to know and love Bob, Anne, Dicke and Lori Whittington. They were such a big part of the Vienna community and they always treated all of us as family. There are so many memories I could share it’s hard to pick just one. Weather it was a trip to seven springs or hosting Mark and I’s senior prom night, time with Dr Bob was time well spent . I always looked forward to Anne’s sweet tea during Dr Bobs famous bbq’s. Dr Bob Whittington, or ER as some affectionately called him, was a wonderful father, husband and friend of all. He will be missed ?
