Emil Michael Guglielmo
December 25, 1931 ~ January 14, 2022
Beloved father Emil Michael Guglielmo entered God's Kingdom on January 14, 2022 after a short battle with heart failure.
He was born to Emil and Elva Guglielmo on December 25, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York. When he was younger, his favorite activities were baseball, football, dancing, track, racing cars and putting out fires "up the mountain" in upper New York State. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and graduated in 1950. He was drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Air Borne and later an MP.
After his military service he became a Mechanical Engineer and was employed by Consultants and Designers and worked at Commonwealth Associates in Jackson, Michigan on the design of the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Power Plant where he met Shirley Woodruff. He was reassigned by C&D to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where he worked in the Oak Ridge National Laboratories. He was reassigned to Rochester, New York where he worked on the Corona Project (known as the spy in the sky). He then moved to Vienna, Virginia where he took a job at the National Bureau of Standards (NIST) building 235 Reactor Division. His position before retirement was as a civilian with the United States Marine Corp as the Assistant Program Manager Combat Services Support Nuclear Biological Chemical/Directed Energy. He was awarded a Commendation for Meritorious Civilian Service.
In 1956 Emil and Shirley were married in Angola, Indiana. Their family increased with three children, Michael Emil Guglielmo, Kimberly Ann (nee Guglielmo) Gunderman, and David Robert Guglielmo.
Emil was a coach in Vienna for 14 years coaching Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball, VYI Basketball and Football. He built a batting cage in his backyard for his teams. He was a member of the JCs, Lions Club and an Usher at St. Mark Church.
Emil is survived by his wife Shirley of 65 years, his daughter Kimberly (Brian Gunderman), sons Michael (nee Elizabeth Bergam), David (nee Karen Collins), grandchildren Christopher, Kyle (nee Alena Kavalets), Brandon (nee Katherine Harper), Thomas (nee Alexa Stickles), Andrew Guglielmo, and great grandchildren Luca, Maxim, Adelaide and Hayley.

Dear Shirley , Michael, Kim and David: Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in this difficult time. Emil will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was my best friend for 64 years. We shared many a good times together. The annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners that we shared for many, many years. Our children growing up together in Vienna. Enjoying our visits sitting on your patio enjoying coffee and desserts with Our children playing in the backyard having a great time. Many fond memories growing up of Uncle Emil, Aunt Shirley and the family. One vivid memory when I was probably 8 or so was driving somewhere in Indiana where Emil was back in in college. Maybe it was TriState College. Condolences and fond memories to all. Dennis & Beverly Burger
Emil was a fellow usher at St. Mark Catholic Church in Vienna, VA. He was such a fun guy – had a great sense of humor, & we shared many similar beliefs. We emailed jokes back & forth for years, plus shared a common political affiliation. He loved his family. Will miss Emil! God bless!
I was an usher with Emil for many years. Knowing that I would see him at mass gave me an extra incentive to attend. He was a real character – lots of common sense (ain’t so common these days), practical, smart, energetic, caring, and funny. He was the real deal. I miss him very much.
Emil was a long term, active, and very beloved member of the Vienna Host Lions Club. He always had a welcoming smile for everyone. He will be remembered for many things, especially his devotion to youth activities, maintaining the Lions’ youth camp, and as a timer and supporter of the Bland Music contest for young people. He was a worker at the Christmas tree lot and frequently showed up with an electric leaf blower at the end of the night to remove the slippery needles to prevent accidents. He was a regular at Lions’ eyeglass recycling, grading and packaging donated eyeglasses for shipment to the less fortunate around the world. For many years Emil organized the Lions’ Elementary School Citizenship Awards and assigned other Lions to attend the school assemblies and present the certificates and gift money. Emil supported baseball programs in Vienna and as a Board member, helped to direct Lions funds toward high school and Babe Ruth teams. Many, many people in our area and abroad have been blessed by his life of service. A life well lived. Peggy Smith
Grandpa will always stay in our hearts as a fun loving and kind guy, who loved to share stories about his life. I remember at our wedding he was taking shots with my dad and grandpa made him so happy by getting him a large glass of vodka to celebrate the wedding in style. You will be missed by all of us.
Simply put: He was a great man and a nice guy. I knew him since the early 70s (maybe the late 60s) and always enjoyed, and still enjoy, hanging out at Mr. and Mrs. G’s house. There will be an empty spot without him on future visits. He will be missed by all who knew him.
I played against Emil in Babe Ruth, and had the pleasure of coaching VYI basketball both with him and against him. He was a terrific man, great with kids, and adults. My condolences to the family. Kevin Cotter
