Dr. George K. Zachariah Passed Away on Dec. 31, 2020 at Vienna, Virginia, U. S. A.

He celebrated his 90th birthday on November 23, 2020 with his family and friends.

George was a professor for 62 years and has made significant contributions in various areas of education, ministry, community, and cultural organization.

He hails from the Kuzhikkalakannimel family of Karthikappally in Kerala, India. He earned degrees from Union Christian College, Alwaye, Kerala, Madras Christian College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, and The University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY. He came to the United States in 1958 on a fellowship at Princeton Theological Seminary where he studied for a year.

He taught classes in psychology, philosophy, education, religion, logic, ethics, and statistics and was a professor at Union Christian College, Canisius College, the University of the District of Columbia, and in prison programs. After retirement, he taught for a summer at the Mar Thoma Theological Seminary, Kottayam, Kerala, India.

He served as President of the UDC Faculty Association/NEA for eight years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the National Education Association. Throughout his life, he was active in service, community, and religious organizations including leadership positions with the Youth Christian Council of Action and the Student Christian Movement and very active in the Bharat Sevak Samajam, Sarvodaya (Gandhian) Movement and the Land-Gift Mission Movement, Buffalo Urban League, Christian Leadership Conference, Fish & Loaves Program, and programs at Lorton Prison. He testified before the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration.

He is one of the founding members of the Mar Thoma Church of Greater Washington. He was an active member of the Mar Thoma Church his entire life, serving in various leadership positions and activities, including the Disocesan Council of North America & Europe and the Editorial Board of the Mar Thoma Messenger. He also served as the Moderator of the Twinbrook Baptist Church.

George is survived by Susan, his wife of 62 years, and his children and their families: George Abe Zachariah (Bindhu, Noah and Jay), Elizabeth Zachariah Varghese (John, Eva and Maya), Varghese Mohan Zachariah (Susan, Josiah, Nathan and Alisha). He was preceded in death by his parents, Ipe and Aleyamma Cherian, and his brothers and sisters, Thankamma, Ipe, Kuruvilla, John, Mathew, and Ponnamma.
