Geraldine Neathery Madigan

On October 5,2020, Geraldine Neathery Madigan, 92, passed away peacefully in Potomac Falls, VA. She was a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother and a much-treasured friend. To know her was to love her as she brought joy to those whose lives she touched. A woman of deep faith, she spent her dying days in prayer for others. A passionate teacher, she inspired students in high schools and colleges for over 60 years.

From the moment she fell in love with her midshipman, she embraced all things Navy. Always quick to join the chorus singing Anchor’s Aweigh or to growl out a “Beat Army,” she loved cheering on the Blue and Gold. Married in 1952, she quickly adjusted to the life of a Navy wife becoming a pro at moving and settling into homes across the country and abroad.

Within four years, she was the proud mother of three children. Family meant everything to her and creating those bonds took extra efforts when relatives lived so far away. She raised her children to love God and country as much as she did and with high expectations for them all. Years later she was blessed with seven grandchildren. She very enthusiastically embraced the role of grandmother, too.

Geri was a woman of many talents and enjoyed playing bridge, knitting, sewing, entertaining, cooking, and gardening. She loved to read, sing, travel and most of all make new friends. She was proud of her heritage and could often be heard exclaiming she was a fighting Irishwoman. She loved life and was always quick to smile and say sweet words.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Judson Neathery and Sarah Beatrice Brooks and her beloved husband James Alonzo Madigan. She is survived by her three children— Peggy Still, Kathryn Madigan, and James A. Madigan, Jr., as well as seven grandchildren—James, Casey, Katharine, Megan, Keeley, Neal, and KJ. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

All are welcome to join the family from 1pm to 3pm on Sunday, October 18th for a visitation at Money & King Funeral Home, W. 171 Maple Ave. in Vienna, VA. The funeral and burial will be at Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel in Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, July 14 at 2:45pm.
