Harry John Staas, age 81, of McLean, VA passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2019.

Known as Jack Staas, he was born on July 6th, 1938 to his parents Phillip and Katherine Staas. Jack and his brother Phillip were raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where they both excelled in school. After graduating from high school, Jack attended Lehigh University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in both Engineering Physics and Applied Sciences. Upon graduating in 1960, Jack attended Georgetown University where he received his law degree in 1964. While attending law school, Jack was also a member of the Georgetown Law Journal and was associated with the Washington Patent Operations of General Electric Corporation in Washington, D.C. Jack spent a few years with patent firms in both New York and Washington, D.C. Having an entrepreneurial spirit, Jack along with long-time friend Jim Halsey, establish Staas & Halsey in 1968 with four chairs, two desks and a folding table.

During his career, Jack was actively involved in virtually all aspects of intellectual property law, including preparation and prosecution of patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, conducting interference proceedings and appellate procedures before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences of the U.S. Patent Office, and litigation in the U.S. federal courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission, encompassing a broad range of technologies.

Jack was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and many of the federal district and appellate courts in the United States, including the District of Columbia, the state courts of Virginia and New York, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Bar Associations of the District of Columbia, New York and Virginia.

He enjoyed boating and golfing, was a lover of music and was an accomplished musician himself.

Jack is survived by his wife of 34 years, Patricia Staas and children from their blended family, David and Amy Staas (CA), Tina and Bill Doyle (VA), Missey Perrelli (VA), Jennifer and Jim Gorey (VA) and Andrew and Elizabeth Staas (VA) along with a combined 12 grandchildren.
