Hazel Jeanette Upton, 85, died with her loving family by her side on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2019 in Prince William, Virginia. Memorial Observance with Eastern Star services will be held July 20th, 1 pm at Money & King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Ave W, Vienna Va. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 3:00pm. Friends and family are welcome at both services.

Hazel was born in Asheville, NC, to Sammie and Violet Wilson along with her older brother Lewis. Hazel married Bill in 1951 while he was serving in the US Army, and she was in High School in Washington DC, focused on art and fashion. They were stationed throughout United States and in England as they raised their Children. Hazel worked as a clerk typist, when possible, through Bill’s military career.

Hazel was a loving wife, mother and grandmother serving as caretaker for her children, grandchildren and her mother. She was a volunteer at Rolling Ridge Elementary School, for Meals on Wheels and by sending cards of cheer to members of Sharon Chapter #63, Order of the Eastern Star, recently becoming a 25-year member. She belonged to the Sterling Trippers a dance group for seniors and took classes in painting at the local community college. Hazel was best known in her community as Grandma Hazel, famous for making over 100 gingerbread houses each holiday season and demonstrating her art at several craft fair each year. With Bill at the wheel, she traveled though out the US and Canada and had managed to visit every state, often with her children or grandchildren and always with her beloved dogs.

Hazel will also be remembered for her love of family card games, her unending kindness and beautiful smile. Hazel is survived by son, Sam Upton (Kendra) of Jacksonville, FL and daughter Vallery Morgan (Gerard Dana) of Gainesville, VA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Nicholas Morgan (Ginger Walker) of Concord CA, Danielle Morgan Smith (Aaron), Owings Mills MD and Anne Lemmers Brown (Jeff) and their children Nicholas and Reagan of Blacksburg, VA.

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriner’s Hospital via Kena Temple or Saint Jude’s Hospital.

  1. Visiting last year and seeing the puppies gathered around her just waiting for that little bite of food. Hazel had to best smile. Seemed like nothing ever got her down. I loved sitting and chatting with her. Thank you for the memory.
